Plight of The Condor
April 7, 2015, 6:41 p.m.
The California Condor may not be the prettiest of endangered species, but that doesnât make it any less important to the ecosystem. Our guest this week on Sea Change Radio is Kelly Sorenson, executive director of the Ventana Wildlife Society, which has been working tirelessly to bring the California Condor back from the brink of extinction, only to encounter another barrier: lead ammunition. We have known for a long time that lead is a neurotoxin that poses health and safety risks, and we have seen over the past several decades corresponding efforts to remove it from toys, paint, gasoline, and other household items. But lead is still quite commonly found in the ammunition used in hunting, and as a result lead enters into the food chain for animals like the highly endangered California Condor. So why hasnât lead been removed from ammunition? Two words: gun lobby. Today we talk with Sorenson about how the NRA and the gun lobby have framed the issue as an âanti-hunting agenda,â despite the fact that environmental groups are actually giving away non-lead ammunition to hunters. We hear about how Ventana and other groups have been pushing back, and the resulting legislative victory.
Out of the Woods - Show #261 - 4-11-15
April 7, 2015, 5:05 p.m.
This version of the program is divided into 6 segments so broadcasters who desire to use this content can insert your station info, etc. The segments vary in length.
Out of the Woods is an earthy, wires and wood, mostly acoustic program featuring some of the best new and established artists from the worlds of folk, bluegrass, singer-songwriters, alt.country, Americana, classic country, old-time, Celtic, and everything that falls in between. The show is an unpredictable mix flowing like a river between moods, often with an edge or in a melancholy minor key. On occasion, Out of the Woods features interviews and live in-studio performances with national and international touring musicians. Past guests have included artists such as Bela Fleck, Si Kahn, Brown Bird, Dana Robinson, Steve Gillette & Cindy Mangsen, Kate MacLeod, Bill Bourne, Karl Shiflett, Rachel Bissex, Darryl Purpose, Bow Thayer, Cosy Sheridan and many others. Out of the Woods grew out of Jon 'Chip' Colcord's former acoustic programs, The Song Swap and Music For The Mountain, separate folk and bluegrass programs which aired in New Hampshire during the 1990s. As a child, Colcord grew up a ravenous music fan with an ear for both rock and folk, from Arlo Guthrie to Aerosmith. All of these influences converge on Out of the Woods to bring you a mix which is as much on the edge as it is down home. Folk music with a rock 'n' roll soul

Poets Aziz Shihab and his daughter: "Does the Land Remember Me?"
April 7, 2015, 9:11 a.m.
On today's show we feature a heartfelt and poignant interview with Palestinian American poet Naomi Shihab Nye, and her father Aziz Shihab, discussing his return to Palestine and his book "Does the Land Remember Me?" The show was recorded June 2007 on a radio program called Deep In The Heart, that originated in San Antonio, Texas and was hosted by Ann Helmlke.
But first, this bit of current news: One of the major stories following the elections in Israel was the election of 14 Arabs to the Knesset who have coalesced into what they call the Joint List Party, now the third largest party in Israel. Many wonder how they will spend their currency. We present a Mondoweiss news report that tells us that they intend not to be silent (mondoweiss.net/2015/03/jerusalem-netanyahu-forms).
Aziz died October 22, 2007, several months after this interview. Aziz Shihab was born in Jerusalem in 1925. He became a journalist during the Israeli-Palestinian conflict 1947-1948, and worked for the BBC. In 1950, Aziz emigrated to the United States with his parents. After attending the University of Kansas he moved to St. Louis, where he continued to practice journalism working for several newspapers such as the St. Louis Globe Democrat, the San Antonio Express, and the Dallas Morning News. In 1998, Aziz started his own newspaper the Arab Star, based in Richardson, TX. He also published two books, " A Taste of Palestine", and "Does The Land Remember Me?: A Memoir of Palestine". Aziz loved writing, journalism, and the truth. He was a firm believer in justice for Palestine, and oftentimes served as a mentor to young Arabs pursuing a career in journalism and writing.
