The 'Kids for Cash' scandal

March 6, 2015, 9:28 p.m.
Today’s guest is the noted producer and director Robert May, whose resume includes an executive producer credit on the Oscar Award Winning film ‘The Fog of War: Eleven Lessons from The Life of Robert S. McNamara.’ More recently, Mr. May served as the Director for the 2013 documentary ‘Kids For Cash’ – a piece focusing on the 2008 scandal involving a zero tolerance judge who sentenced some 3,000 children to a private for-profit detention facility, all the while pocketing a ‘finder’s fee’ of $2.2 million resulting from the facility’s construction.

The Secular Humanist Revival Meeting!

March 6, 2015, 5:04 p.m.
Well, this is a twisted thing--since I first broadcast this show, I learned that the guy delivering this powerhouse sermon of enlightened thinking is actually gripped by a pathological QueerFear...WHUH? Orson Scott Card (yep, THAT guy!) delivered these brilliant science-based sermons at SF Cons in the '80s, and they were a rapturous joy for the thinking man. Having heard that Secular Humanism was a religion, he thought there might be room for a secular humanist evangelist, so he wrote his SECULAR HUMANIST REVIVAL MEETING and began putting on performances. Styled on old tent revivals, Card took them a step further, arguing for logic and reason within the concept of religion that reconciles them both. All I can say is WHAT THE HELL, DUDE? How can a man's enlightened thinking just suddenly slam into a brick wall? If you disconnect the message from the messenger, this is Bag Balm for your spiritual brain.

Susan George on her Book "Whose Crisis, Whose Future?"

March 6, 2015, 12:50 p.m.
We speak to Susan George about her newest book "Whose Crisis, Whose Future?" Susan is one of Transnational Institutes (TNI) most renowned fellows for her long-term and ground-breaking analysis of global issues. Author of fourteen widely translated books, she describes her work in a cogent way that has come to define TNI: "The job of the responsible social scientist is first to uncover these forces [of wealth, power and control], to write about them clearly, without jargon... and finally..to take an advocacy position in favour of the disadvantaged, the underdogs, the victims of injustice.

Facing Racial Anxiety And Stereotype Threat

March 6, 2015, 12:26 p.m.
The U.S. prides itself on the ideal of equality. However, the educational, health care, and legal systems, are plagued by institutional biases against racial minorities. A closer look reveals that these disparities are likely not due to hateful intent, but caused by a combination of factors that include implicit bias, racial anxiety, and stereotype threat. Lindsay Beyerstein interviews Rachel Godsil, research director of the Perception Institute, who explains how the unconscious associations and attitudes that we have towards people of different racial groups can affect the way we behave and what we can do to relieve some of the racial anxiety that may be inadvertently causing many of us to behave in ways that are contrary to our explicit values. FBI Director James Comey’s comments on race “All of us in law enforcement must be honest enough to acknowledge that much of our history is not pretty,” Comey said. “At many points in American history, law enforcement enforced the status quo, a status quo that was often brutally unfair to disfavored groups.” Source: Point Of Inquiry: Getting Over Racial Anxiety, with Rachel D. Godsil What Everyone Needs to Know about Marijuana Legalization Angela Hawken talked about the pros and cons of marijuana legalization.
