Out of the Woods - Show #255 - 2-27-15

Feb. 25, 2015, 5:12 a.m.
This version of the program is divided into 6 segments so broadcasters who desire to use this content can insert your station info, etc. The segments vary in length. Out of the Woods is an earthy, wires and wood, mostly acoustic program featuring some of the best new and established artists from the worlds of folk, bluegrass, singer-songwriters, alt.country, Americana, classic country, old-time, Celtic, and everything that falls in between. The show is an unpredictable mix flowing like a river between moods, often with an edge or in a melancholy minor key. On occasion, Out of the Woods features interviews and live in-studio performances with national and international touring musicians. Past guests have included artists such as Bela Fleck, Si Kahn, Brown Bird, Dana Robinson, Steve Gillette & Cindy Mangsen, Kate MacLeod, Bill Bourne, Karl Shiflett, Rachel Bissex, Darryl Purpose, Bow Thayer, Cosy Sheridan and many others. Out of the Woods grew out of Jon 'Chip' Colcord's former acoustic programs, The Song Swap and Music For The Mountain, separate folk and bluegrass programs which aired in New Hampshire during the 1990s. As a child, Colcord grew up a ravenous music fan with an ear for both rock and folk, from Arlo Guthrie to Aerosmith. All of these influences converge on Out of the Woods to bring you a mix which is as much on the edge as it is down home. Folk music with a rock 'n' roll soul

Steve Almond on the Post-Jon Stewart Era

Feb. 24, 2015, 7:40 p.m.
When Jon Stewart recently announced his plan to leave the Daily Show – the fake news show that has steadily become the go-to news-source for millions of Americans – one fan of the show, Steve Almond, chose to see it as a positive development. Almond, a humorist and author of popular books such as "Candyfreak," "Against Football," and "Rock ‘n Roll Will Save Your Life," believes that Americans have come to lean on savvy, insightful comedic news shows like "The Daily Show" and "The Colbert Report" as a sort of crutch, an all-too-often substitute for getting off the couch and making an actual difference in the real world. This week on Sea Change Radio, Steve Almond and host Alex Wise discuss what Jon Stewart’s absence from our nightly routine might mean for the environmental movement, and whether screens in general help or hinder activism and systemic change.

Iran and the US: Eternal Enemies or Natural Partners?

Feb. 24, 2015, 2:49 p.m.
“Iran and the US: Eternal Enemies or Natural Partners?” That’s the name of a formal speaking event at MIT on February 17. The speaker was Stephen Kinzer, longtime journalist and author of some remarkable books. Kinzer’s thesis is that Iran should be regarded as a bona fide friend, not an enemy, of the United States. He explains why. Ample evidence shows this, including favors granted without even being asked. US leaders are the problem, starting with the Dulles brothers. Last fall, Truth and Justice Radio aired Kinzer’s recent lecture based on his then-newest book The Brothers: John Foster Dulles, Allen Dulles, and Their Secret World War (archive.org/details/KinzerJun2014theDullesBrothers). By studying the lives of these two ruthless men who held the most powerful positions in the country for many years, Kinzer poses an answer to the question: Why does the United States behave as it does in the world? Before The Brothers, he wrote 6 books, including Overthrow and All the Shah’s Men. We present this event on Truth and Justice Radio as a public service. We think TJR’s listeners will be dismayed, or at least baffled, by Kinzer’s seeming confidence in the future integrity of John Kerry and Barack Obama. It’s not part of his central thesis, so we let it pass without further comment.

Thermonuclear Monarchy - Prof. Elaine Scarry TWO of TWO

Feb. 24, 2015, 11:50 a.m.
Highly praised by Noam Chomsky as inspiring us to abolish the colossal folly of nuclear weapons, Professor Elaine Scarry proposes how to accomplish that task in her book: Thermonuclear Monarchy. Elaine Scarry says that Social Contract practice is a tool for preventing injury and overseeing entry into war. She argues that the constitution and bill of rights hold two clauses that can be used to control and disarm nuclear weapons. The first such clause is the right of Congress to declare war, laid down in Article one, Section 8, Clause 11 of the US constitution. The second provision that can help safeguard nuclear weapons - to everybody's surprise - is the second amendment protecting the right of the people to keep and bear arms. This very provocative statement will be explained in this radio program.
