Out of the Woods - Show #254 - 2-20-15

Feb. 18, 2015, 6:58 a.m.
This version of the program is divided into 6 segments so broadcasters who desire to use this content can insert your station info, etc. The segments vary in length. Out of the Woods is an earthy, wires and wood, mostly acoustic program featuring some of the best new and established artists from the worlds of folk, bluegrass, singer-songwriters, alt.country, Americana, classic country, old-time, Celtic, and everything that falls in between. The show is an unpredictable mix flowing like a river between moods, often with an edge or in a melancholy minor key. On occasion, Out of the Woods features interviews and live in-studio performances with national and international touring musicians. Past guests have included artists such as Bela Fleck, Si Kahn, Brown Bird, Dana Robinson, Steve Gillette & Cindy Mangsen, Kate MacLeod, Bill Bourne, Karl Shiflett, Rachel Bissex, Darryl Purpose, Bow Thayer, Cosy Sheridan and many others. Out of the Woods grew out of Jon 'Chip' Colcord's former acoustic programs, The Song Swap and Music For The Mountain, separate folk and bluegrass programs which aired in New Hampshire during the 1990s. As a child, Colcord grew up a ravenous music fan with an ear for both rock and folk, from Arlo Guthrie to Aerosmith. All of these influences converge on Out of the Woods to bring you a mix which is as much on the edge as it is down home. Folk music with a rock 'n' roll soul

Thermonuclear Monarchy - Prof. Elaine Scarry ONE of TWO

Feb. 17, 2015, 12:22 p.m.
Noam Chomsky said about the book Thermonuclear Monarchy: “That we have escaped disaster so far is a near miracle. (Elaine) Scarry’s remarkable contribution should inspire us to abolish this colossal folly.” Elaine Scarry is Professor of Aesthetics and General Theory of Value at Harvard. Her most recent book: Thermonuclear Monarchy, reminds us that one man, the President of the United States, has the power to end life for every one else by setting off nuclear weapons. Richard Nixon told reporters in 1974, “I can go into my office and pick up the telephone, and in 25 minutes 70 million people will be dead.” Professor Scarry says that this violates our constitutional rights, undermines the social contract, and is fundamentally at odds with the deliberative principles of democracy. And she offers a new line of arguments and strategy for the nuclear disarmament movement. At a time when the risk of nuclear war between the US and Russia around the conflict in Ukraine comes to world wide attention, the status of the nuclear weapons arsenals, and the question of who has the power to set them off becomes an existential question for all. Elaine Scarry spoke in January 2015 at the Wellington Ave. Church, Chicago, Illinois, by invitation of Chicago Area Peace Action.

This week William talks with Peter Werbe, a long time editor of Fifth Estate magazine based in Detroit, MI for now. Fifth Estate is an "anarchist, anti-capitalist, anti-authoritarian, anti-profit project" which is published cooperatively three times a year, and this year marks its 50th year of publication. The magazine tackles current events, issues, theory, and praxis which would be of interest to an anarchist audience. To find out more about this project, and to subscribe, you can visit http://www.fifthestate.org Peter and William talk about the magazine's historical trajectory, from its inception in 1965 as a weekly, less political periodical, to its takeover by anarchists in 1975, to what it is today. They talk about the Eat The Rich Gang and its associations with Fifth Estate magazine, as well as directions the project could take. Evil Susie's "Light My FIRESTORM!" Show

Feb. 15, 2015, 9:39 a.m.
Tonight the show becomes EVIL SUSIE'S SLACKTIME FUNHOUSE! It's prescient that Ray Manzarek was mentioned on scrubgenius this week, because tonight's show is NOTHING BUT every single version of "Light My Fire" I could pack into the hour--and I couldn't pack it all in, so it's overflowing. You want to hear a heavy metal version of that song? Got it. You want funk/soul? Got it. You want "psychedelic bluegrass," whatever the friggin' hell that is? Got it. You want a bunch of Japanese guys who sing "Come on, Baby, right my fiyah"? Ooh yeah, we got that, too--along with classical violin, pop pablum, easy glistening...and so much more. If I was to say to you that we didn't, you know that I would be a *riar.* The perpetrators of this crime (besides ME) are as follows: Methodica For Sale Band, Belgrade (from Yugoslavia) Charlie Parra (heavy metal guitarist from Peru) Mike Flowers Pop Soul Session (at the 15-min. mark) Ananda Shankar (Of COURSE it's sitar!) Type O Negative The Psychedelic Soul Jazz Guitar of Joe Jones The Flowerz (1968 garage band out of Reading, PA) Ebony Rhythm Band (at the 30-min. mark) Beresford Creek ("psychedelic bluegrass" from 1977) Soul Sam (reggae) The Mops (at the 45-min. mark--1968 Japanese psychedelia!) Julie Driscoll, Brian Auger & The Trinity Amorphis (heav-VEE metal) Colin Tribe (ukelele) Helmut Zacharias & His Orchestra (easy glistening) Nigel Kennedy (classical violin--9 minutes of it!)

Child of God

Feb. 15, 2015, 8:04 a.m.
This week we boldly take on the James Franco’s directed CHILD OF GOD from American novelist Cormac McCarthy, if you know his work (The Road, Blood Meridian, No Country for Old Men), then you know the tone… Set in mountainous Sevier County, Tennessee in the 1960s, Child of God tells the story of Lester Ballard, a dispossessed, violent man described as “a child of God much like yourself perhaps.” Ballard’s life is a disastrous attempt to exist outside the social order. Successively deprived of parents and homes and with few other ties, Ballard descends literally and figuratively to the level of a cave dweller as he falls deeper into crime and degradation… Released in the summer of 2013,Child of God was placed for official competition at the 70th Venice International Film Festival and was an official selection of the 2013 Toronto International Film Festival – After its release to the public, it received mainly mixed reviews – from scathing to high praise. Many people who watched the film have gone on to say that “Although they thought it may have been good, they just couldn’t like it, nor would they EVER recommend it”. Franco did however garner a fair amount of “attaboys” from his peers who saw his ability to take on such material for a directorial debut as highly bold and brave… We cap it off with our Top 3 Movie Degenerates, why wouldn’t we?

Liberal Intoxication - Robert Kagan Under the Influence of An Idea

Feb. 14, 2015, 9:23 p.m.
1st in a series of programs to explore ideas that are engaging and shaping the world. Dr. Kagan has the ear of former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton who may be the next President of the US. Libya along with Iraq and Syria was on Dr. Kagan's to do list of countries in need of "Democracy Promotion", and as Secretary of State, Hillary Clinton orchestrated US bombing of Moammar Gadhafi's troops under the pretext of a humanitarian intervention. http://www.globalresearch.ca/the-neoconservative-hit-list-iraq-libya-and-now-syria-a-plan-for-global-us-military-supremacy/5407538 Dr. Kagan is a brilliant speaker who has the ear of other powerful people. Among them his wife, Victoria Nuland, Assistant Secretary of State for European and Eurasian Affairs, is implicated in organizing the coup against the elected (democratic) government in Ukraine to place a more compliant "elected" leader in power. Near the end of the presentation, "what to do about the Ukraine?" was raised. His response personalized the crisis to Putin, ignored the US backed regime in Kiev's murderous attacks on civilians in the eastern Russian speaking area, and recommended placing a NATO Division on the Russian border of a non-NATO country; the very act that the Russians have repeatedly stated they see presents them an existential threat and would lead to war. Dr. Kagan is of the notion that the Russians are bluffing. Former Secretary of State Madeleine Albright, who shares Dr. Kagan's ideas, thought that the deaths of 500,000 Iraqi children due to sanctions she oversaw was "worth it" to achieve the policy ends of the Clinton administration; unfortunately the program ended before Dr. Kagan was asked what would be an acceptable death toll for him to achieve his goal of subjugating Russia to US dominance.
