Out of the Woods - Show #250 - 1-23-15

Jan. 21, 2015, 8:06 p.m.
This version of the program is divided into 6 segments so broadcasters who desire to use this content can insert your station info, etc. The segments vary in length. Out of the Woods is an earthy, wires and wood, mostly acoustic program featuring some of the best new and established artists from the worlds of folk, bluegrass, singer-songwriters, alt.country, Americana, classic country, old-time, Celtic, and everything that falls in between. The show is an unpredictable mix flowing like a river between moods, often with an edge or in a melancholy minor key. On occasion, Out of the Woods features interviews and live in-studio performances with national and international touring musicians. Past guests have included artists such as Bela Fleck, Si Kahn, Brown Bird, Dana Robinson, Steve Gillette & Cindy Mangsen, Kate MacLeod, Bill Bourne, Karl Shiflett, Rachel Bissex, Darryl Purpose, Bow Thayer, Cosy Sheridan and many others. Out of the Woods grew out of Jon 'Chip' Colcord's former acoustic programs, The Song Swap and Music For The Mountain, separate folk and bluegrass programs which aired in New Hampshire during the 1990s. As a child, Colcord grew up a ravenous music fan with an ear for both rock and folk, from Arlo Guthrie to Aerosmith. All of these influences converge on Out of the Woods to bring you a mix which is as much on the edge as it is down home. Folk music with a rock 'n' roll soul

Neocolonial thinking rules from Paris to UNICTR

Jan. 21, 2015, 6:44 p.m.
Tiphanie Dickson describes the media coverage of Charlie Hebdo and related events as having massive coverage but little serious investigation, needing more reliable sources of journalism, being short on facts but long on nauseous opinion. New laws now make condoning terrorism a higher penalty than actual incitement. (What does that say about "freedom of speech" and double standards?) Professor Dickson provides details of the failings of the ICTR, and substantiates the argument of Herman and Peterson’ in their latest book, “Enduring Lies.” She makes a powerful case that former Prime Minister Jean Kambanda was brought to a guilty plea by a dubious process, was turned down when he asked for a trial, eventually testified for the defense in a major case and remains to this day in prison.

Ocean Plastic, Not Fantastic

Jan. 20, 2015, 5:27 p.m.
Doug Woodring is the founder of the Ocean Recovery Alliance. His name may sound familiar to long-time listeners of Sea Change Radio because we featured Woodring back in 2010, when he was leading Project Kaisei, a mission to gather information on and document the massive repository of plastic that has accumulated in the North Pacific Gyre. The Ocean Recovery Alliance is the next logical step on Woodring’s path. The organization focuses on advocacy, raising awareness, and actually cleaning up the plastic floating in our world’s oceans and interfering with marine ecosystems. Woodring provides a status update on oceanic health, walks us through some of the cost incurred by our global plastic habit, and tells us about what the Alliance and its projects are accomplishing to help us clean up our act and our oceans.
