On the Palestine Diaspora in America - "Home Away From Home"

On today's show we pay special tribute to the Palestinian diaspora in America by sharing with you excerpts of Najib Joe Hakim's project called "Home Away From Home".
Combining photography and oral history recorded onto audio, the Home Away from Home project by Najib Joe Hakim shines light on the experience of Palestinians living in the United States. Hakim interviewed more than two dozen Palestinian Americans in the San Francisco Bay Area about their relationship to the US and to Palestine, and asked them what home means to them. The result is a compelling portrait series of Palestinian Americans of various generations, some who were born in Palestine and some who have never set foot there. Some describe dual identity issues common to other immigrant communities in the US, but particular to Arab and Muslim Americans at this moment, is their being treated as the enemy, as the US wages war on, or funds occupation in, their homelands.
Telling their stories and the stories of their families is so very important to Palestinians. Their stories are the heart and soul of the Palestinian narrative. And listening to their stories is crucial for us non-Palestinians who struggle to understand what is happening in the Israeli/Palestinian struggle. Understanding begins with listening to their stories.
These 5 narratives are assembled to run back-to-back. Some of those interviewed on this morningâs broadcast identify themselves and some do not.

Out of the Woods is an earthy, wires and wood, mostly acoustic program featuring some of the best new and established artists from the worlds of folk, bluegrass, singer-songwriters, alt.country, Americana, classic country, old-time, Celtic, and everything that falls in between. The show is an unpredictable mix flowing like a river between moods, often with an edge or in a melancholy minor key. On occasion, Out of the Woods features interviews and live in-studio performances with national and international touring musicians. Past guests have included artists such as Bela Fleck, Si Kahn, Brown Bird, Dana Robinson, Steve Gillette & Cindy Mangsen, Kate MacLeod, Bill Bourne, Karl Shiflett, Rachel Bissex, Darryl Purpose, Bow Thayer, Cosy Sheridan and many others. Out of the Woods grew out of Jon 'Chip' Colcord's former acoustic programs, The Song Swap and Music For The Mountain, separate folk and bluegrass programs which aired in New Hampshire during the 1990s. As a child, Colcord grew up a ravenous music fan with an ear for both rock and folk, from Arlo Guthrie to Aerosmith. When Jon Stewart recently announced his plan to leave the Daily Show â the fake news show that has steadily become the go-to news-source for millions of Americans â one fan of the show, Steve Almond, chose to see it as a positive development. Almond, a humorist and author of popular books such as "Candyfreak," "Against Football," and "Rock ân Roll Will Save Your Life," believes that Americans have come to lean on savvy, insightful comedic news shows like "The Daily Show" and "The Colbert Report" as a sort of crutch, an all-too-often substitute for getting off the couch and making an actual difference in the real world.
