Fast-food workers hit McDonald's with multiple class-action lawsuits claiming McDonald's is deliberately and is systematically stealing employees' wages by forcing them to work off the clock, shaving hours off their time cards and not paying them overtime, among other illegal practices. For workers already struggling to afford the basics, it's nearly impossible to make ends meet McDonald s " which raked in nearly $5.6 billion in profits last year " doesn't pay workers for all of their hours.
Attorney Joseph Sellers said: McDonalds has tried to shield itself from liability for these unlawful employment practices committed at its franchise restaurants. But we found evidence that McDonalds Corp. had indeed exerted the control over the daily operations at these franchise restaurant that makes it legally, jointly responsible for these unlawful pay practices. We believe it's time that McDonalds accept responsibility for the pay practices in its franchise restaurants as it serves jointly as an employer there.

Irish academics explain why they too call for boycott

Today we take an in-depth look at the call for the academic boycott of Israeli educational institutions as called for by the American Studies Association (ASA). This call has led to enormous flap on several US campuses as well as a welcomed broad discussion of Academic Freedom. We will try to get behind that discussion by tuning into a fascinating recorded press conference by an organization called Irish Academics for Palestine in Dublin where Irish academics explain to the media why they are calling for a similar nationwide boycott of Israeli academic institutions In Ireland. It includes an examination of the historic patterns of discrimination against Palestinian academics inherent in the Israeli system, as well as a look at the principles of Academic Freedom. Joining the Irish Academics is a Palestinian professor and author, and an Israeli academic, both of whom add important context to the discussion. Many of the discussions of academic freedom that we have seen concerning the ASA call for the academic boycott have dealt with the principles of academic freedom without the needed context of political reality. That is provided here. The coverage of the Academics for Palestine Press conference includes the introduction of all of the participating professors and their full presentations and a portion of the question and answer period.

Out of the Woods is an earthy, wires and wood, mostly acoustic program featuring some of the best new and established artists from the worlds of folk, bluegrass, singer-songwriters, alt.country, Americana, classic country, old-time, Celtic, and everything that falls in between. The show is an unpredictable mix flowing like a river between moods, often with an edge or in a melancholy minor key. On occasion, Out of the Woods features interviews and live in-studio performances with national and international touring musicians. Past guests have included artists such as Bela Fleck, Si Kahn, Brown Bird, Dana Robinson, Steve Gillette & Cindy Mangsen, Kate MacLeod, Bill Bourne, Karl Shiflett, Rachel Bissex, Darryl Purpose, Bow Thayer, Cosy Sheridan and many others. Out of the Woods grew out of Jon 'Chip' Colcord's former acoustic programs, The Song Swap and Music For The Mountain, separate folk and bluegrass programs which aired in New Hampshire during the 1990s. As a child, Colcord grew up a ravenous music fan with an ear for both rock and folk, from Arlo Guthrie to Aerosmith. Richard Haass argues that for the U.S. to remain important in this century, it must reduce its foreign interventions (both military and humanitarian) and focus instead on restoring its own economic health. Richard is interviewed by E.J. Dionne a columnist for the Washington Post.
Richard says that U.S. national security depends on the United States addressing its burgeoning deficit and debt, crumbling infrastructure, second class schools, and outdated immigration system. Richard's primary focus is on domestic policy; the need to reverse the decline of U.S. competitiveness, stabilize the middle class, and strengthen the economy. Dr. Haass is the author or editor of eleven books on American foreign policy and one book on management.

Manufactured Crisis: The Untold Story of the Iran Nuclear Scare

Distinguished Inter Press Service reporter Gareth Porter appeared and spoke 3-26-2014 at the MIT Center for International Studies (CIS). The subject came from his new book, "Manufactured Crisis: The Untold Story of the Iran Nuclear Scare." While the title summarizes it well, this book provides chapter and verse in enormous detail, which he discussed on this occasion at MIT.

It's fascinating to learn the details by which our "leaders," teamed with Israel's, tried to perpetrate a fraud in order to trigger a war against Iran, one of the agenda items on the neocons' hit list ever since the 90s (along with Iraq, Libya, Syria, and Ukraine). More important now, however, is the fact that the effort continues as we speak.
As Porter explains in detail, it's really true that Iran does NOT have a nuclear bomb program. All U.S. intelligence agency officials on the ground now acknowledge this. All claims to the contrary have come from untrustworthy sources including, remarkably, "Curveball" from the Iraq WMD fraud. Despite this knowledge, policy officials, Israel's toadies in Congress, and Kerry and Obama continue to assert that Iran DOES have a nuclear bomb program, and that it must confess to it and dismantle it or face even more sanctions including possibly drones, bombs, etc.
The principle of "guilty until proven innocent" - as bad as that is - has been stretched to "guilty despite official acknowledgment of proof of innocence beyond any doubt," or as Porter concludes, "guilty therefore let's go"!
Porter was introduced by MIT CIS Director John Tirman (not on this recording). One of the subtle ironies of the event is its venue at CIS, a longtime CIA collaborator staffed by professors and scholars who bob and weave with policy issues, rarely ever questioning the so-called facts asserted by our governments' "leaders." If you listen to the Q&A, you will even hear a professor who insists the Iranians are guilty!
