Out of the Woods - Show #201 - 2-13-14

Feb. 14, 2014, 9:29 a.m.
This version of the program is divided into 6 segments so broadcasters who desire to use this content can insert your station info, etc. The segments vary in length, but I try to keep them approximately 30 minutes in most cases. Out of the Woods is an earthy, wires and wood, mostly acoustic program featuring some of the best new and established artists from the worlds of folk, bluegrass, singer-songwriters, alt.country, Americana, classic country, old-time, Celtic, and everything that falls in between. The show is an unpredictable mix flowing like a river between moods, often with an edge or in a melancholy minor key. On occasion, Out of the Woods features interviews and live in-studio performances with national and international touring musicians. Past guests have included artists such as Bela Fleck, Si Kahn, Brown Bird, Dana Robinson, Steve Gillette & Cindy Mangsen, Bill Bourne, Karl Shiflett, Rachel Bissex, Darryl Purpose, Bow Thayer, Cosy Sheridan and many others. Out of the Woods grew out of Jon 'Chip' Colcord's former acoustic programs, The Song Swap and Music For The Mountain, separate folk and bluegrass programs which aired in New Hampshire during the 1990s. As a child, Colcord grew up a ravenous music fan with an ear for both rock and folk, from Arlo Guthrie to Aerosmith. All of these influences converge on Out of the Woods to bring you a mix which is as much on the edge as it is down home. Folk music with a rock 'n' roll soul

Dr. Rashid Khaladi - Defining the Palestinian Cause

Feb. 13, 2014, 7:45 p.m.
Dr. Khalidi spoke about community organizing and solidarity in the struggle to define ones self when pursuing justice for ones own cause. He details the years of hard work that proceeded this moment when the tide of public opinion has shifted from looking at Palestinians as terrorists to seeing them as the rightful victims of a historical wrong and the self destructive policies of extremist Israel. Dr. Khalidi talks about the years of work that have led to changing the narrative of Palestinian identity in the U.S.; campus organizing and the role of the BDS movement; the significance of Palestinian films being screened for the Oscars; and most recently the Superbowl and New York State and City controversies that resulted in victories for the Palestinian cause. He notes the significance of prominent members of the New York City Jewish community informing its new mayor that they do not support the Zionist polices of Israel and that neither AIPAC or Israel represents their values or speaks for them.

They explain why they favor of exporting coal as part of the Voices of Coal project. Decades in prison for visiting another village?

Feb. 12, 2014, 8:36 p.m.
This week we step back and simply convey weekly reports from two sources we trust and recommend, International Middle East Media Center (IMEMC) and The Electronic Intifada. The respective websites are imemc.org and electronicintifada.net. Each one yields downloadable audio and considerable backup text. From IMEMC: "This week, Israeli leaders criticize US Secretary of State, John Kerry for his mediation efforts in the peace process, meanwhile Israeli attacks targeting Palestinians this week leave dozens injured. ..." and more. From Electronic Intifada: "An interview with activist Maath Musleh in Jerusalem, who reported on a resident facing decades in Israeli prison simply for visiting a nearby village; A mob of Israeli youth attack and beat three Palestinians in Jerusalem, we’ll have a look at the situation of Israel’s impunity and unchecked racial hatred; How harsh economic and social conditions in the occupied West Bank and Gaza Strip contribute to violence against women; ..." and more.
