Michael Lind explains how the U.S. has reinvented itself economically and politically a number of times as a result of new technologies. Michael sees a pattern of each new technology overwhelming the political and regulatory system with the U.S. government laging a generation or two behind the technologically-induced economic changes. Michael contends that change requires a crisis or a war or both to overthrow the old regime and usher in the new.
Michael is interviewed by Terrence McNally a journalist and radio host. Michael Lind is Policy Director of the Economic Growth Program at the New America Foundation in Washington, D.C., Editor of New American Contract and its blog Value Added, and a columnist for Salon magazine.

British Columbia Rejects Tar Sands Pipeline
Canada is still looking for alternative export routes for Tar Sands oil. Danielle Droitsch of the Natural Resource Defense Council's Canada Project tells Steve Curwood that British Columbia has rejected a proposal to send a pipeline through their pristine British Columbia.

FRIENDS Association for Children was founded in 1871 by a former slave, Lucy Goode Brooks. She saw the need to create a nurturing space for the children struggling, in the aftermath of the Civil War, as orphans or in dislocated families. More than 140 years later, FRIENDS still provides for under-resourced children in their communities at Jackson Ward and Church Hill. They offer licensed childcare, summer camps, and afterschool enrichment including music and performing arts classes, as well as family support services. Janie Rezner's guest on Women's Voices, KZYX, is American mountaineer, writer, and environmental health scientist, Arlene Blum. She is best known for leading an all-woman ascent of Annapurna, a climb that was also the first successful American ascent.

Dr. Blum is currently on a crusade against chemical flame retardants, which are found in almost all upholstered furniture.
High concentrations have been found in the bodies of creatures as geographically diverse as salmon, peregrine falcons, cats, whales, polar bears. Most disturbingly, a recent study of toddlers in the United States conducted by researchers at Duke University found flame retardants in the blood of every child they tested. The chemicals are associated with an assortment of health concerns, including antisocial behavior, impaired fertility, decreased birth weight, diabetes, memory loss, undescended testicles, lowered levels of male hormones and hyperthyroidism. We hear testimony that the real figures are many orders of magnitude higher, and that the crisis is far from over, with radiation leaks increasing and a pool containing over 400 tons of nuclear fuel suspended 100 foot in the air in a badly damaged building highly vulnerable to any further seismic disturbance.

Published in 2013 the book is the most up to date international overview over complementary currencies and alternative systems of credit. The diversity of these systems is quite staggering, examples come for Poland, Brazil, Japan, the US and even the center of all banking, as some see it, Switzerland. But what they all have in common is their response to and critique of the current system of banking and money management.
