Correcting the Record on the "Cleantech Crash"

If you watched last weekend’s 60 Minutes piece on the so called “Cleantech Crash,” you might have taken a moment to check the channel and make sure you weren’t watching Fox News. The story focuses almost exclusively on failed companies that have received government support with no coverage of clean technology successes, no information on the success/failure ratio of other venture capital investments, and no mention of all the taxpayer money that goes to support traditional, polluting energy technology. Instead the venture is depicted as an unmitigated fiasco and an embarrassing folly on the part of President Obama. This most recent episode of the popular CBS news show has been widely criticized as having a Fox News-y flavor. It’s not entirely surprising when you consider that the current president of CBS News, David Rhodes, spent about 15 years at Fox News. Host Alex Wise‘s guests today on Sea Change Radio are Joe Romm of Climate Progress and formerly of the US Dept. of Energy, and Katie Fehrenbacher a senior writer at GigaOM. Each of them wrote a response to the 60 Minutes show, and today they offer their takes on how the news giant got it wrong, from interviewing the wrong people, to providing no actual data, to pulling out that old, rusty lightning-rod, Solyndra.

Israel's Credibility; Mohammed Hmidat of PARC

First we discuss the gradual collapse of Israel's credibility worldwide. When Israel makes a "peace" deal, it evaporates instantly for the excuse of the moment. Israel's settlement incursions continue and continue, never mind solemn deals, never mind justice. Because of its antics, international players have finally begun demonstrating unwillingness to believe, or rely on, Israeli leaders' proclamations or promises. (Unhappily, those antics are defended by our very own wily "leaders" in the US government and supported by US taxpayers.) Mohammed Hmidat is quality control coordinator for the Palestinian Agricultural Relief Committee (PARC). PARC was set up by Palestinian farmers to provide rural development, environmental protection, women's empowerment, and marketing and shipping support for exporting farmers' output. This includes olive oil, which is widely considered the best in the world. Hmidat explains PARC's programs and recounts the Israeli barriers faced by Palestinian farmers who sell internationally. These include checkpoints, delays, height limits, inspections, duplicate certifications and licensure, border hassles, etc., all of which wind up costing a lot of extra money that would be saved in just conditions. But ultimately they are getting their products out.

BEST IN PEACE: - REV. FATHER PAUL MAYER, RIP Pacifists, civil rights activists, progressives, liberation theologists, and radical ecologists gathered Sunday, 5 Jan 2014, at New York’s Judson Memorial Church for a final farewell to a trans-generational inspiration for social justice -- REVEREND FATHER PAUL MAYER, who passed away on 22 Nov 2013. Born a Jewish child of refugees from Nazi Germany, Paul unlikely became a Benedictine monk for nearly two decades, before his novel vestment as a Roman Catholic priest – until a conservative Vatican stripped him of that honorific following his marriage to a Catholic nun and his persistent protests, along with the equally-radical Berrigan Brothers, against the US’ nuclear war machine, and for Japanese radiation victims, as well as challenging racial injustice in America, and US-backed clandestine warfare throughout the hemisphere. He was an early friend and supporter of, and co-marcher with, the SCLC’s REV. DR. MARTIN LUTHER KING, JR. Just as Martin expanded the civil rights movement into anti-Vietnam war territory, so did Paul revision the US-dominated military-corporate-capitalist system as the smoldering fuse for a global environmental crisis, as cofounder of the Climate Crisis Coalition. Paul was a constant prophetic and friendly presence at such protest venues as the United Nations during the US-backed overthrow of Haiti’s democratically elected President Aristede, for Native-American rights, and against the US blockade of Cuba, invasion of Iraq, the overthrow of Libya, multi-trillion-dollar military spending, and so many other salient issues that separate today’s ‘liberals’ from true progressives in this epoch of reactionary ‘bipartisan’ media monopoly. Paul Mayer was also a personal friend of mine, to my eternal gratitude for his persistently pioneering the path to radical evolution, interpersonal compassion, and political clarity. In his memory, we herewith present The Rev. Shaka Cinque is the only remaining imprisoned member of the Angola 3, three prisoners imprisoned Black Panthers accused of participation in the murder of a prison guard in the early 1970's. Robert Hillary King (http://www.kingsfreelines.com/) was released from prison when his case was overturned in 2001 and has written and spoken about the case of the Angola3 since. Herman Wallace (http://hermanshouse.org/) served 41.5 years in solitary confinement for the case and died 3 days after his release near the end of 2013.
