Cavallaro discusses the truth about US drone warfare against the people of Pakistan - especially under the Obama regime - and the report he co-authored with the Global Justice Clinic at NYU School of Law titled, âLiving Under Drones.â

The Virginia Conservation Network convenes and coordinates the nonprofits and individual lobbyists working for environmental conservation in the Commonwealth of Virginia. VCN organizational members include Virginia's Sierra Club, the Piedmont Environmental Council, the James River Association, and Chesapeake Climate Action Network, and VCN's individual participants are activists and lobbyists, sourced from, for example, the Virginia League of Conservation Voters. Their working groups advocate for state-level policy in the categories of uranium, energy, water, and land use and transportation. Some recent issues include hydraulic fracturing (fracking), community net metering, keeping the ban on uranium mining, revoking the hybrid car tax, applying the transportation budget overhaul to multimodal transportation (e.g., public bus systems, light rail systems), and stormwater funding. Can you think of two everyday materials with a worse environmental rep than Styrofoam and plastic bottles? From production through disposal, these things produce toxic gasses, are major culprits in our single-use disposable culture, and are rapidly invading our oceans and destroying marine food chains. This weekâs guests on Sea Change Radio are each working on eco-friendly alternatives to these environmental villains. First, we hear from Eben Bayer, one of the founders of Ecovative, a company that has developed a mushrom-based alternative to extruded polystyrene foam (more commonly known by its copyrighted name, Styrofoam). He tells us how Ecovativeâs biologically-based material is replacing packing materials, insulation and maybe soon food storage containers that were previously the exclusive domain of polluting, non-biodegradable stuff. Next, host Alex Wise talks to Rick Eye, CEO of Blue Can Pure Water, a company offering an alternative to those ubiquitous plastic water bottles: on-the-go water in aluminum cans. He explains why it has taken so long for this much better idea to spring up, and discusses how heâs doing his part to reduce plastic waste.
Oil For War - Thomas Frank On the Tar Sands

The largest refinery for tar sands in North America is just miles from down town Chicago on the shores of Lake Michigan. Thomas Frank has written and spoken out for years about the British Petroleum (BP) refinery in East Chicago, Indiana, and faced retaliation for doing so. The BP refinery is fed by pipelines around Lake Michigan and is the source of the mountains of petroleum coke (pet coke) in SE Chicago that are spewing black dust over the area and fueling protests by local residents. Frank discuses the life- and planet-threatening developments at the center of U.S. energy policy, and resistance to it, from Canada to the Gulf of Mexico.
