Extractive Industries, Indigenous Development and the Environment Part One

ON November 12, 2013, the Campus Sustainability Office of the University of Winnipeg, in conjunction with the University of Winnipeg Student Association held a panel discussion on the topic of Extractive Industries, Indigenous Development and the Environment. The event was part of the Grassroutes Sustainability Festival. THere has been much made of the overlapping concerns of the environmental movement and the sovereignty of Indigenous peoples attempting to protect their land in the face of exploitive resource extraction industries. As a Houston-based energy company closes in on the Elsipogtog First Nation in News Brunswick this timely panel discussion attempted to probe some of the concerns around the relationship between environmental and indigenous sovereignty concerns. Panelists include Derek Nepinak, Wab Kinew, Dr. Richard Atleo, Darren Courchene, Dr. Jacqueline Romanow, Agnes Palowska, and Sadie-Phoenix Lavoie. The moderator was Julie Pelletier.
