"This Week in Radio News" from host Tom Roe at Wave Farm's WGXC. This week: "Low-Power FM applications are now at the FCC in the United States, and online at fcc.gov, The show listens to radiosurvivor.com on how the over 2,800 applicants fared, and break down the New York applicants. Representatives from two LPFM stations, one a jazz-oriented station in Athens, NY, and another a pagan station in Palenville, are interviewed. Also, a look at the proposed Trans-Pacific Partnership trade agreement, and its impact on communications policy. And no broadcasters have yet hung antennae at the new transmission facilities atop One World Trade Tower in New York. The highest building in the city is without an antenna for the first time since anyone can remember. The show will explain why, and here the story of some pirate radio broadcasting atop the former World Trade Center. Researcher GEORGE GERBNER discusses how American TV distorts our understanding of the world.
Example: TV violence does not increase real-world violence. But it does make people more afraid of violence--and more supportive of harsh "anti-crime" measures. (See "Notes.")

Recently WikiLeaks released "the secret negotiated draft text for the entire TPP (Trans-Pacific Partnership) Intellectual Property Rights Chapter. The TPP is the largest-ever economic treaty, which encompasses nations representing more than 40 per cent of the world s GDP." WikiLeaks is sparking a public debate about the contents of this agreement that wasn't possible when the agreement was secret from public opinion. The TPP is much more than a trade and tariffs agreement, it will give transnational corporations greater control over our food policies, Internet access, medicines and health care, the environment, regulation of banks and labor standards. The TPP provides for trade tribunals permitting corporations to sue governments for the loss of expected future profits,if a country passes an environmental or a health law that will cost the corporation money. Indeed corporations will have inordinate power over virtually every aspect of our lives. Building Bridges entertains the discussion with Lori Wallach on the TPP that WikiLeaks intended.
