On October 6th, Silvia Federici and George Caffentzis spoke at an event titled âThe Politics and Possibilities for the Commons: Radical Horizons in the Age of Austerityâ in celebration of the 250th Anniversary of the Halifax Common. It was one of many events organized by Friends of Halifax Common to commemorate the gift of the Halifax Common âto and for the use of the inhabitants of the Town of Halifax as Commons forever,â by King George III in 1763.
Silvia Federici is a world-renowned feminist scholar, writer and activist. A veteran of the international Wages For Housework campaign and anti-nuclear struggles, she is author of Caliban and the Witch: Women, the Body and Primitive Accumulation, and Revolution at Point Zero: Housework, Reproduction, and Feminist Struggle.
George Caffentzis is a scholar and activist based in New York City. A member of the influential Midnight Notes collective he has written on capitalism, technology, education and the nature of money. He is the author, most recently, of In Letters of Blood and Fire: Work, Machines, and the Crisis of Capitalism and he is an organizer with the New York-based Strike Debt movement.
The discussion was led by questions from Max Haiven. This is an abridged version of the event.

YES! "BOB"'s SLACKTIME FUNHOUSE has made it to that landmark number, ONE THOUSAND EPISODES!--and if not for Evil Susie, I would have missed it like I did BSTF #666, so I'm glad she wasn't asleep at the switch. It was her idea to make this show a return to the basics, so the theme tonight is THE CONSPIRACY AND ALL ITS INSIDIOUS WORKS. In fact, she just went ahead and put the show together herself to make sure it was done right, and I ain't gonna argue with the way the division of labia worked out. For once, Evil Susie put her agenda aside and did a bang-up job of it, with hot lashings of Little Fyodor and Babushka, Barnes & Barnes, ESO, Zilch Fletcher, the theme (in Portuguese!) from ACCION MUTANTE, Suburban Lawns, the Walk-Ins...and J.E. Sumrell of Columbus GA, whose 25¢ audiocassette I bought 20 years ago (and just re-found again!) yielded up the anthem "Blame the Conspiracy"! He was basically irked about '90s-era pee testing, but it's a perfect song for our uses. Plus, there's a piece by a mysterious seeker named "Heinous Anus" who showed up at WREK in '95 with this incredible creation on cassette, then vanished...
The songs are backed up by some all-star SubGenius preachers who know what they're ranting about! You will hear the deathless wisdom of Rev. Ivan Stang, Dr. Philo Drummond, Dr. Hal Robins, Pope David N. Meyer, and Pope Sternodox of Little Rox as they lace into the Con that oppresses and seeks to control us all. This stirring, thrilling show will inspire and arouse your Yeti glands and will leave you armored against the dark machinations of The Con. But tread carefully through this shadowy bourne, dear seekers--even having "Bob" at our backs may not be sufficient to protect us tonight. I'd pack some heat, just in case.

WHO report on Iraqi birth defects a whitewash

A joint study by the WHO and the Iraqi Ministry of Health on birth defects in Iraq has just been made public. Critics says the methodology is so flawed that the results are meaningless. Michael Keefer was one of the signatories on a letter calling for release of the report in November 2012.
