Sanders rejected the OBAMA administration’s call for military actain against Syria, proposing instead “people’s wars” : Against the multi-trillion military operations, racism, gender discrimination, poverty, Wall Street greed and Social Security cuts -- among others. US GOAL: CRACK PIPE BETWEEN SYRIA, IRAQ AND IRAN TO BOGART EURO NATURAL GAS MARKET FROM RUSSIA As Marianne Faithful put it so long ago, “It’s just an old war, not even a Cold War.” The current Syrian “crisis” is, in its essence, an energy war for control of the European natural gas market, waged between two old rivals: the US and Russia. In short, Syrian President BASHIR AL-ASSAD declined four years ago to run a natural gas pipeline from (his new enemy and jihadi-broer) QATAR – through Syria, and on to Turkey, to supply natural gas for Europe – thereby breaking Russia’s near monopoly on Eurogas exports. Two years later, Assad compounded his offense to western interests by agreeing with to move Iranian natural gas through neighboring Iraq, into Syria, and on to points north and east by way of the Pan-Islamic Pipeline running from Egypt trough Syria, Lebanon, Jordan, and ultimately, Turkey and/or Austria. As soon as that agreement was signed, with Russian blessings, Qatar, France, NATO and the US massively escalated their covert war, public propaganda and jihadi/military operations against Syria.... GEN. WESLEY CLARK (Ret.) describes his shock and awe at the immediately-adopted post-9/11 and Iraq war plans by the Bush administration and PNAC to militarily overthrow “seven countries in five years” – including Syria, Iran, Libya and Somalia – in a candid 2007 address to the California Commonwealth Club; and JOHN BARRASSO of the Senate Energy Committee spills the beans on US interests in breaking Russian dominance in the European natural gas market and opening up American liquefied natural gas – collected from the recent “fracking” boom -- to the international market, especially Europe and NATO allies. The Party of the GREEN Part

April 29, 2012 (SOAPBOX #129) - Cindy brings us Dr. Jill Stein, who is currently seeking the Green Party's nomination for President of the United States. She graduated from Harvard Medicine in 1979, taught internal medicine for years and has been a pioneer in environmental health advocacy. You might want to check out her clear and oh-so lucid perspective, which is very well presented on her green web site! Read the articles - they're short, they're illuminating - and they're chock full of surprising information! Especially read those about Dr. Stein's "Green New Deal." Listen in, and hear her tell Cindy that public opinion now seems to be at a breaking point. "As independent political peace/justice advocates, we've been ahead of the curve of the mainstream - but now the mainstream is catching up with us to say "You guys are really right; we really are being shafted by the system!" She sees a tremendous hunger out there for a politics of integrity, a politics that people can trust, a politics that expresses this incredible movement for democracy, justice and peace that is alive and cooking out there at the grassroots but has typically been denied by establishment of politics."

Blood on the Tracks

April 15, 2012 (SOAPBOX #128) - Cindy brings us the powerful & moving story of S. Brian Willson (No: not that one, not the Beach Boys vocalist.) This one's the peace activist, with his own web site, S. Brian Willson. After serving in the Vietnam War, S. Brian Willson became a radical, nonviolent peace protester and pacifist, and this memoir details the drastic governmental and social change he has spent his life fighting for. Chronicling his personal struggle with a government he believes to be unjust, Willson sheds light on the various incarnations of his protests of the U.S. government, including the refusal to pay taxes, public fasting, and, most famously, public obstruction. On September 1, 1987, Willson was run over by a U.S. government munitions train during a nonviolent blocking action in which he expected to be removed from the tracks. Providing a full look into the tragic event, Willson, who lost his legs in the incident, discusses how the subsequent publicity propelled his cause toward the national consciousness. Twenty three years later, Willson told his story of social injustice, nonviolent struggle, and the so-called American way of life. He wrote Blood on the Tracks: The Life and Times of S. Brian Willson. He tells an inspiring tale of a "good boy" from New York state who volunteered to "fight Communism," was sent 9,000 miles from his home and ordered to kill Vietnamese civilians, thus creating his own personal "Howard Zinn" moment of profound regret.

April 1, 2012 (SOAPBOX #127) - Today may traditionally be April Fools day, but Cindy discusses no jokes with her guest: She talks with long time Soapbox friend, the prolific David Swanson, about some very serious and vital subjects - starting with his new book The Military Industrial Complex at 50. Chris Hedges

February 12, 2012 (SOAPBOX #120) - Cindy remarks: Journalist/activist, Chris Hedges, caused quite a stir this past week when he wrote a column for Truthdig saying, in essence, that the "black bloc anarchists" were killing the Occupy movement. The response was immediate and sometimes fierce. Although, I agree with Chris that violence for the sake of violence is counter-productive, it's been my experience that the violence usually begins with law enforcement, with little, if any, provocation. What should our response be within a society where top-down violence is perpetrated with near impunity all over the world? These are questions that need to be asked and the answers need to be devised with the greatest and highest good (fostering peace and justice) kept at the forefront. I had the opportunity to interview Chris a few days before he released the article, but we did talk about the violence in the Occupy movement somewhat, as our topic was really the lawsuit Chris filed against President Obama and DefSec, Leon Panetta, regarding the recent National Defense Authority Act (NDAA).

Listen only if you want to be inspired with enthusiasm and optimism that we the people can, and will, make change for the better. I first met Phil D. in September of 2005, when Camp Casey activists were on a tour from Crawford, TX to Washington DC after our initial Occupation in August of 2005. Phil came to a talk I gave in Brooklyn, NY--then, a few days later he was on Bill O'Reilly's show defending me as, "one tough mother." The video of that appearance has been brought to my attention so many times recently, I asked my producer, Mikey, to get me Phil Donahue for the show. Phil agreed to come out of retirement to help kick off the 4th Season of the Soapbox with gusto. I can promise you that this Sunday's show (2pm pacific) is definitely worth listening to and all I am going to say is: I miss Phil's voice of reason and optimism in today's demented discourse on what passes for "news" and commentary in this country.

Janie Rezner interviews Genevieve Vaughan, and the Gift Economy

Janie Rezner's guest on Women's Voices, September 16th-- independent researcher, author, speaker and activist Genevieve Vaughan. Genevieve has been working on the theory of a maternal gift economy as an alternative to Patriarchal Capitalism for many years and her books include "For-giving, a Feminist Criticism of Exchange" and "Women and the Gift Economy: A Radically Different Worldview is Possible." Consider that we humans have lived successfully without money or the concept of exchange for most of our 100,000 years on earth. Money, i.e. the exchange paradigm, is the cornerstone of patriarchal domination. Genevieve writes, "The gift paradigm has the advantage of restoring mothering to its rightful place in the constitution of the human. What has been wrongly proposed in the construction of gender, with devastating effects, such as the promotion of the values of dominance, competition and hierarchy (which are non nurturing values) can be countered by re introducing gift giving as a social value and interpretive key. Both male and female human beings are basically nurturers. One gender is not the binary opposite of the other. If we reintroduce the gift paradigm into our interpretation of the world, we will find our "gift-giver within" which will then be acknowledged and validated."

We need a negotiated solution in Syria

Professor (Emeritus) Atif Kubursi is as excited as the rest of us that our protests, and the diplomacy at the UN, have slowed the drive to war in Syria. It can resume very quickly, but every effort should now be taken to highlight the peaceful options to end the conflict in Syria without further bloodshed.
