#287 -- Obey and Keep Calm, Part 1

The propaganda barrage preceding the US attack on Syria has begun. So all the more timely is Temujin Doran's new film, "Obey: How the Rise of Mass Propaganda Killed Populism." It's about the military, political, and economic crimes of the Corporate State. It features readings from from Chris Hedges' 2010 book, "Death of the Liberal Class." We'll hear the first half of "Obey" and then--to cheer things up a bit--a sweet short film by Doran explaining the slogan, "Keep calm and carry on."

Across the March of Time 1963 to 2013, for Jobs & Justice Marching on Washington Spurred on by the acquittal of George Zimmerman in the shooting to death of the unarmed African-American teen Trayvon Martin, and the recent Supreme Court decision that ripped the heart out of the Voting Rights Act, legislation written in the blood of a people, both of which again exposed the wide racial divides in the nation, people boarded buses and headed to D.C. on the fiftieth anniversary of the 63' March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom. They came again for voting rights, for educational opportunities, for employment and workers rights, and against the system of incarceration, police violence and laws the permit the murder of their children - all still unsettled issues. You'll listen to and contrast the demands and sounds from the 63' March with those of today. You'll hear the most heartfelt messages and evocative presentations that remind us of the original 63' message - that the struggle for freedom and economic rights must coalesce for meaningful change. Be inspired, be renewed and recommit to agitate for Jobs, and Freedom after listening to interviews with civil rights icons, the sheros and heroes who recount their sacrifices of then and prescriptions for today. We need to have more conversations about deportation and Our community

Im/migration myth busting week happened in the Springtime of this year, on March 18th-22nd at the University of Guelph campus. In light of the continued and growing closing off of opportunities for migrating people to live and stay in our communities with full-on paper rights, the campaign commenced with a speakers event about Canada’s system of deportation of poor and working-class racialized im/migrants. Matthew Behrens spoke at the event, and Migrant Matters Radio recorded this representing of the knowledge and experience of allies. Behrens is a long-time community organizer and has worked closely with the targets of Canadian and U.S. “national security” profiling for many years. He is co-coordinator of the Campaign to Stop Secret Trials in Canada, and founder of the Anne Frank Sanctuary Committee, which works to promote church sanctuary for refugees. The event was organized by the all-volunteer-run Guelph-based migrant worker advocacy collective Fuerza/Puwersa.

Out of the Woods is an earthy, wires and wood, mostly acoustic program featuring some of the best new and established artists from the worlds of folk, bluegrass, singer-songwriters, alt.country, Americana, classic country, old-time, Celtic, and everything that falls in between. The show is an unpredictable mix flowing like a river between moods, often with an edge or in a melancholy minor key. On occasion, Out of the Woods features interviews and live in-studio performances with national and international touring musicians. Past guests have included artists such as Bela Fleck, Si Kahn, Brown Bird, Dana Robinson, Steve Gillette & Cindy Mangsen, Bill Bourne, Karl Shiflett, Rachel Bissex, Darryl Purpose, Bow Thayer, Cosy Sheridan and many others. Out of the Woods grew out of Jon 'Chip' Colcord's former acoustic programs, The Song Swap and Music For The Mountain, separate folk and bluegrass programs which aired in New Hampshire during the 1990s. As a child, Colcord grew up a ravenous music fan with an ear for both rock and folk, from Arlo Guthrie to Aerosmith.
