For thirty years, those days of infamy have been commemorated on August 6-9th. Ted Schmidt tells us about Toronto's special event this year, and also efforts to revitalize the role of the Catholic church in social justice.

Halifax solidarity with Elsipogtog

Elsipogtog, traditional territory of Miâkmakik, north of Moncton, New Brunswick. Since early June, it has been the epicentre of resistance to shale gas mining in NB, with a core of Mi'kmaq people and allies set up at an encampment there. Near the encampment, SWN (âswinâ, a Texas-based company) has been exploring for shale gas, the first step towards hydrofracturing, or fracking. Fracking is a toxic chemical intensive process producing what opponents consider unacceptable destruction to the surrounding water and land. Over the last two months, over 30 people have been arrested while engaged in peaceful opposition to SWN's activities. While the core of resistance comes from Elsipogtog and surrounding communities, people from neighbouring provinces have also lent their support. In the following, I speak to two Halifax based allies with the people of Elsipogtog, Billy Lewis and Allison McCready. Billy is an indigenous elder, who has helped bring allies against shale gas together. Allison is one of the founders of the recently formed Halifax Coalition Against Fracking. We focus on why the anti fracking struggle at Elsipogtog is a regional issue; opportunities and challenges that allies bring and organizing in Halifax.

Thousands Continue to Rally for "Justice for Trayvon"
As legal experts continue to deconstruct the "not guilty" verdict in the trial of George Zimmerman, the man accused of murdering Trayvon Martin, an ugly truth rears its head again: racial disparities are alive and well in our criminal justice system. "In truth, when African-American boys and men are killed by non-blacks, more often than not, justice will not be served. Trayvon Martin is the latest name on a long list of African-American men and boys whose non- black killers escaped justice in America's courts a list that runs from Emmett Till to Amadou Diallo to Oscar Grant to Sean Bell. Meanwhile, "Justice for Trayvon" rallies and vigils continue to be held throughout the country. And, Building Bridges brings you highlights of the New York rally, where the Rev. Al Sharpton demanded that the Justice Department pursue a federal civil rights case against Zimmerman and called for a rollback of stand-your-ground self-defense laws. Martin's mother, Sybrina Fulton, also spoke to the New York crowd. "Today it was my son. Tomorrow it might be yours," she said.

Court Appointed Special Advocates

In honor of National Child Abuse Prevention Month, Inspire Indeed welcomes two Chesterfield Court Appointed Special Advocates. (The Chesterfield CASA is a branch of Greater Richmond SCAN. SCAN, or Stop Child Abuse Now, is a hub for child-centered resources that includes CASA offices in the Greater Richmond area.) In legal proceedings on child abuse or neglect, the judge must decide whether to return the child to their family or find a replacement home (in foster care or by adoption). Courts in the greater Richmond area have Court Appointed Special Advocates to gather comprehensive information from the childâs caregivers, school, social services, and more. A court report compiled by the CASA carefully considers all aspects of the childâs home environment, making a recommendation for placement with the child's happiest and healthiest future in mind.
