Out of the Woods is an earthy, wires and wood, mostly acoustic program featuring some of the best new and established artists from the worlds of folk, bluegrass, singer-songwriters, alt.country, Americana, classic country, old-time, Celtic, and everything that falls in between. The show is an unpredictable mix flowing like a river between moods, often with an edge or in a melancholy minor key. On occasion, Out of the Woods features interviews and live in-studio performances with national and international touring musicians. Past guests have included artists such as Bela Fleck, Si Kahn, Brown Bird, Dana Robinson, Steve Gillette & Cindy Mangsen, Bill Bourne, Karl Shiflett, Rachel Bissex, Darryl Purpose, Bow Thayer, Cosy Sheridan and many others. Out of the Woods grew out of Jon 'Chip' Colcord's former acoustic programs, The Song Swap and Music For The Mountain, separate folk and bluegrass programs which aired in New Hampshire during the 1990s. As a child, Colcord grew up a ravenous music fan with an ear for both rock and folk, from Arlo Guthrie to Aerosmith. Interview with environmental activist Will Parrish

Dear All, I interviewed Will Parrish about his experience stopping a highway expansion for 11 days by sitting 50 feet up in heavy equipment. This occurred in Willits CA where a strongly opposed city bypass is being built by Caltrans, permanently destroying wetlands, forests, and valley floor. Many people have been arrested sitting in trees and for attempting to supply activists with food and water. The California Highway Patrol is the state militia and they are performing military style "extractions" of protestors. I asked Will why he took this action, and how it affected him. This interview was conducted after his release from jail and the day before his arraignment. Will is 31 years old, a California native, and a committed environmentalist. FISA Judge Blasts NSA Regime

FISA JUDGE CALLS NSA SURVEILLANCE REGIME UNCONSTITUTIONAL A rare public hearing of a mysterious security agency was held this week in Washingtom, where a former supervising judge of the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Court declared that the government is acting unconstitutionally in the star-chamber practices of the clandestine court that routinely allows global surveillance of electronic communications. The shadowy "Privacy & Civil Liberties Board" was established by President George W. Bush 2004, but went for years without any members, prompting a Congressional conclusion that "it appears to be a presidential appendage, devoid of the capability to exercise independent judgement and assessment or to provide impartial findings and recommendations" on intelligence and Constitutional issues. This week, in one of its rare proofs of life, the panel met for public hearings to minimize the fallout from the revelations of NSA whistleblower EDWARD SNOWDEN, who revealed ubiquitous monitoring and storage of emails, phone calls, and virtually every type of commercial or electronic records on all US citizens. The hearing began with an opening statement by JAMEEL JAFFER, Deputy Legal Director of the ACLU; Former federal district judge JAMES ROBERTSON, who served on the secret Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act court between 2002 and 2005, condemned the ex-parte procedures of "Foreign Intelligence" courts, saying that "A judge needs to hear both sides of a case"; KENNETH WAINSTEIN, a former Bush homeland security adviser, attempted to defend the alleged legality of the NSA/FISA surveillance regime; MARK ROTENBERG, executive director of the Electronic Privacy Information Center, dissected the scandalous seizure of millions of Verizon customer records, pointing out that "metadata" is far more revealing than the content of calls; Private researcher ASHKAN ZOLTANI stated that in today's global data environment, there is no such thing as a "national" border, thereby undermining the prime excuse offered to the American public for the NSA's surveillance over-reach; and BOB DYLAN - "Desolation Row".

Opponents of the Guantanamo Bay Detention Center argued for closure of the facility. They refer to the impact of the prison on U.S. credibility, the number of trials held in the 11 years that the prison has been open, bills passed by Congress that prevent the release of prisoners, and the legitimacy of military commissions. President Obama is criticized for failing to close the facility and for not vetoing a 2012 defense bill that barred the transfer of detainees.
