Journalist/author Jeremy Scahill gave a hard-hitting address on the subject of America's "Dirty Wars" at Harvard U. on 4-27-2013. It was followed by panel discussion with Jeremy, Amy Goodman, and Noam Chomsky. Scahill discusses some of the dirtiest, ugliest, and most murderous secrets of the Obama administration and that of several other earlier Presidents.
Scahill is author of "Dirty Wars: The World Is a Battlefield" (just out), and before that "Blackwater: The Rise of the World's Most Powerful Mercenary Army" (2008). He and Rick Rowley co-produced the film "Dirty Wars: The World Is a Battlefield" (opening June 14 at the Kendall Cinema, Cambridge).
Of particular significance: Scahill observes that Obama not only continued all the outrageous Bush programs of secrecy, war promotion, civil liberties elimination, and lies and coverups in full force, but in fact has intensified them. Meanwhile the great body of liberals who were angry at Bush don't seem to want to criticize Obama.

Ken Buesseler: Fukushima Ocean Impacts

Ken Buesseler is Senior Scientist at the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution on Cape Cod. He specializes in natural and manmade radionuclides in the ocean. First he worked on fallout from atmospheric nuclear weapons testing, then on the impacts of the Chernobyl explosion on the Black Sea. Most recently he examined radionuclide contaminants in the Pacific ocean after the melt downs of the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plants.
Within weeks of the accident Buesseler managed to charter and equip a research vessel that arrived off the coast of Japan in June of 2011 to take the first ocean measurements. And you are about to hear his report from that scientific venture and his follow-up.
The most shocking result in those first weeks was that the level of radioactive Cesium in the water off Fukushima had risen from 1 1/2 BQ per cubic meter to 15 and later to an unprecedented 100 million Bq per cubic meter.
The research team also found that, even though the levels of radioactive isotopes have come down in the past year, they did not return to pre accident levels. Buesseler says it also shows that there is a constant inflow of new radioactivity from the ruined nuclear plant itself and also from the ground water and rivers that flow into the ocean through the contaminated land of the Fukushima province. As of March 2013 radiation in water near the plant was still a thousand time higher than it once was.

There is such irrational hatred of President Obama out there in Fauxville and Lunatic-land -- to the level that the haters have created an artificial Obama that doesn't really exist -- that I have to reject these scandals immediately. But these IRS and Department of Justice accusations deserve a closer examination, and so that's what I try to do here. I admit, I am a progressive and I mostly support the President. At least somebody does!
French military presence in Mali to continue

The READ Center is an adult literacy organization that operates classrooms and provides customized tutoring through its eight chapters in the Greater Richmond area. The 2005 National Assessment of Adult Literacy revealed that, of American adults, 41% are operating at a low literacy level and 14% are operating at a below-basic literacy level. When people cannot follow written directions on prescription bottles, apply for jobs, earn their GED, comprehend their driver's manual, orate scripture in church, or help their children with their homework, their personal and professional quality of life is seriously impaired. Addressing illiteracy since 1982, the READ Center now offers free year-long classroom programs for many adults (342 just last year)! Nestle Waters Canada fights drought limits

Nestle has reached an agreement with the Ontario Ministry of Environment that it will not face restrictions on its water use even during a drought. The Council of Canadians has made submissions to the Environmental Review Tribunal raising concerns. Emma Lui is Water Campaigner with the Council of Canadians.
