Professor Noam Chomsky is a hugely eminent philosopher, author, activist, linguist, and public speaker whose career has spanned close to seven decades. Guy Evans of the Smells Like Human Spirit Podcast traveled to MIT in Cambridge, MA for a thirty minute interview, in which the following topics were discussed:
-Western nations' use of 'necessary illusions' to control the attitudes and opinions of their citizens;
-How tactics of propaganda, spearheaded by Edward Bernays, eventually manifested into the advertising industry;
-Woodrow Wilson and his mission to turn a pacifist public into jingoist warmongers;
-The general goal of commercial advertising which is to undermine markets, creating uninformed consumers making irrational choices;

The Theory and Practice of Predictive Programming

Predictive programming is the theory that the public's responses to events such as grand-scale terrorism are pre-conditioned through cultural production. Proponents of this theory point to elements in television, film, and literature that have seemingly foreshadowed catastrophes before they have occurred, and suggest that the collusion between intelligence agencies and media institutions is much deeper than is given credit for.
Tom Secker, the British-based writer, researcher, and filmmaker, argues that we can be quite certain that this is a real phenomenon. In this episode, we critically examine some of the main tenets of the predictive programming concept, discuss his recent article on the CIA's Operation Mockingbird, and take a look at the reasons why we have seen the rise of the 'morally ambiguous protagonist' in popular culture. Former FBI Translator on the 'Pacification of the Public'

Sibel Edmonds is the founder and President of the National Security Whistleblowers Coalition (NSWBC), and runs the independent website Boiling Frogs Post. During her time working for the FBI in 2001-2002, she reported on serious acts of misconduct within the Bureau, and was subsequently retaliated against, and fired. After a long battle, she published the book Classified Woman: The Sibel Edmonds Story, earlier this year. Her courage and willingness to fight for justice are traits that are to be admired, and we were very pleased to have the opportunity to speak with her on the podcast. Enjoy!

The showdown between Jones and Morgan had been brewing for a while, with tensions being escalated in the wake of Morgan labeling Larry Pratt, executive director of the Gun Owners of America, an âunbelievably stupid manâ on his show last month.

On December 31, 2011, President Obama signed into law the National Defense Authorization Act For Fiscal Year 2012 (NDAA). The National Defense Authorization Act is a bill passed into law each year which allows the government to continue funding national security interests and the military for the next fiscal year.
However, NDAA 2012 was different â it contained a series of striking provisions which appear to violate basic principles of American jurisprudence and the constitution itself.
The most contested section of the bill is Section 1021. Section 1021 defines an individual subject to detention as a person who was a part of, or substantially supported, al-Qaeda, the Taliban, or âassociated forcesâ that are engaged in hostilities against the United States or its coalition partners.
Many feel that this vague language leaves journalists, war correspondents, out-spoken activists and serious critics of US government foreign policy in real danger of harm, whilst representing a fundamental loss of constitutionally guaranteed rights. Therefore, a lawsuit was filed by the 'Freedom Seven', a group including Noam Chomsky, Chris Hedges, and Daniel Ellsberg. Last September, a Federal judge, Judge Katherine Forrest, agreed that the plaintiffs did have standing in arguing that Section 1021 is unconstitutional, and ruled for a permanent injunction of the provision.
The Obama administration appealed, and the hearing for both sides was earlier this week. Guy Evans of the Smells Like Human Spirit Podcast was at the courthouse, and in this podcast, he outlines the background to the case, why it is so important, and shares some observations from the day itself. The (Twisted) Morality of Drone Strikes

The bedrock of a justice system in a democratic nation is that a person is presumed innocent until proven guilty. In a society adhering to this principle, the burden of proof lies with the individual or institution that declares, not denies, wrongdoing or illegality. This burden of proof requires an accuser to collect and present enough evidence to prove, beyond any reasonable doubt, that the accused is guilty. This is more than a theoretical concept, rather, it is recognized by the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, article 11, which states that âeveryone charged with a penal offence has the right to be presumed innocent until proved guilty according to law in a public trial at which they have had all the guarantees necessary for their defense.â
Until the early 18th Century, in both Europe and the New World, it was common for subjects to be tortured in order to extract confessions from them, a practice that became disallowed over time, and is rarely defended, aside from perhaps the fascists and Soviet governments of the 20th Century, and George W. Bush, who cited that valuable intelligence could be obtained as a result of such methods.
In addition to torture of prisoners, another practice that appears to be diametrically opposed to the âinnocent until proven guiltyâ guideline is the idea of preemptive strikes, or preemptive war. The debate as to what entitles a state or peoples to attack proactively has been contentious for hundreds of years; and in the post 9-11 era, the waters have become murkier still.
