Mass Shooters, Mental Illness, Entitlement, and Guns - A Conversation with Patricia Williams

In the last three decades there have been over 62 mass shootings in the United States, almost half of them in the last seven years. The FBI defines a mass shooting as one involving a single gunman killing four or more victims in a public place. The average age of the gunman is 35. They are all male, and almost all are white. In the mainstream media, these killers are seen as individuals - terrifying, but individuals nonetheless, their histories parsed for motive or signs of mental illness - and indeed, most of them suffer from mental illness. Almost no one suggests that broader social factors are at work. It might surprise to learn in the eight days since Adam Lanza took the lives of 20 children and six adults in Newtown, CT, 100 people have lost their lives to guns in the U.S. Since 2001, over 270,000 people have been killed by guns here. Whatever the multiple causes of gun violence are, they include a social tolerance that has rendered it nearly invisible outside these frightening outbursts of mass murder.

Two prominent Canadians, Jeff Rubin and David Suzuki were in Winnipeg Monday October 1 to speak at the Royal Manitoba Theatre Centre Mainstage as part of a national tour focused on merging economics with environmental principles to create a more sustainable future.
David Suzuki is an academic, broadcaster, author and award-winning environmental activist. Jeff Rubin formerly Chief Economist and Chief Strategist at CIBC World Markets, author of the books 'ENd of Growth' and 'Why Your World is about to get a Whole Lot Smaller,' and one of the world's most sought after energy experts. They both spoke to CKUW News Director Michael Welch before the public event about issues surrounding their joint project.

Billionaire Elected to ANC Leadership in South Africa

On December 18th the governing African National Congress elected as ANC deputy president Cyril Ramaphosa, a former revolutionary and union leader turned billionaire businessman. Ramaphosa sits on the board of Lonmin mining company, and called for intervention against platinum mineworkers amid wildcat strikes in Marikana, South Africa, last August. On August 16th, South African police opened fire on 100 striking Lonmin mineworkers, killing 36 and wounding 78.
Inequality in South Africa has deepened since the end of the apartheid era, says our guest Patrick Bond, and Ramaphosaâs election promises more of the same. We look at the legacy and future of the ANC in âthe most unequal country in the world, where we have the highest degree of labor militancy and the most protests per person in the world, by all objective measures.â
With Patrick Bond, political economist and senior professor at the University of KwaZulu Natal School of Development Studies in Durban, South Africa, where he directs the Centre for Civil Society.

After Sandy Hook - Gun Violence in America

The mass shooting at Sandy Hook elementary school on December 14th is the most recent of a string of mass killings this fall, and the second deadliest school shooting in recent U.S. history. Since 1982, there have been at least 60 mass killings across the United States. Meanwhile the gun lobby has been pushing gun-friendly laws in state legislatures throughout the country. On December 13th Michigan state legislators voted to allow concealed weapons in schools, daycare centers, stadiums and churches.

He works with Bill McKibben on the campaign against the Keystone XL Pipeline, joined in civil disobedience and was arrested.
