Radical Parenting and Sustaining a Multi-Generational Movement

China Martens has published Future Generation, a zine about radical parenting since 1990 (published as a book by Atomic Books in 2007). Vikki Law has worked to get the voices of women in and out of prison around by producing Tenacious: Art and Writing by Women in Prison and the recently republished Resistance Behind Bars: The Struggles of Incarcerated Women. China and Vikki are authors, editors, anarchists, activists and also, mothers. This week we speak to Vikki Law and China Martens about the newly published book, Don't Leave Your Friends Behind: Concrete Ways to Support Families in Social Justice Movements and Communities (PM Press, 2012), which they edited and contributed to. Williams and the Plasmatics, the Dead Milkmen, and Frances Cannon (AKA Fran Baskerville) the Singing Psychic with a FUNHOUSE favorite--"Earthquakes," her flat, nasal, disco-fueled, and totally sincere dire warning for tectonic turmoil in 1987. So dare to think of it--this is where all that procrastination you've been investing is going to pay off BIG TIME! At this point, anything you've been wise enough to back-burner ain't NEVER gonna get done. HA! Sandy a Disaster for Public Housing Tenants in NYC

NYC Public Housing Tenants Hung Out To Dry In Wake Of Sandy When Hurricane Sandy slammed NYC, tens of thousands public housing tenants were left without power, heat, & running water; elderly & disabled residents were trapped on the upper floors of the developments, oftentimes lacking food and water and life essential medical needs. Weeks after the wind roared and the water surged the voices of NYC Housing Authority ("NYCHA") tenants continued to be drowned out, amidst the complacency of NYCHA to the still unresolved issues and conditions. When NYCHA management finally met with the tenants, long after Sandy came and went it was greeted by the pained & angry protestation of the tenants due to its failure to show concern for, response to and accountability for the horrible conditions that many still endure. The chorus of residents decried NYCHA's response to refusing immediate rent abatements, to compensate them for their suffering and losses during and in the aftermath of the hurricane. Chanting "No services, no rent," many of the residents left the meeting in disgust to reconvene later, formulate demands and plan to take their complaints to NYCHA headquarters.
