Putting your affairs in order before you die is the topic of this edition of Radio Curious. Our guest is Maggie Watson, a professional organizer who lives on the Mendocino Coast in Northern California. She is the author of, “A Graceful Farewell: Putting Your Affairs in Order,” a collection of ideas and forms that make it easy to list what you own and where everything is. In the course of our conversation Maggie Watson turned the microphones and began to ask me about estate planning, the documents which are useful for everyone to have and the differences between a will and a trust. In my day job I am an attorney in Ukiah, California and devote a portion of my practice to estate planning. Maggie Watson and I met in the studios of Radio Curious in early December, 2006.

We join the US Campaign's executive director, Ahmed Abuznaid, and their Attorney Diala Shamas of the Center for Constitutional Rights. The conversation is kicked off by Foundation for Middle East Peace’s Lara Friedman.

In the first decade of this century many of us learned that the threshold for keeping our planet healthy was 350 parts per million of carbon dioxide. Advocates like those at 350.org emphasized the need to adopt practices to help the earth stay below that number. Well, unfortunately, we earthlings have blown through that limit and are presently looking at 419 parts per million. But that doesn’t mean the idea of lowering our carbon emissions is moribund. And there are still organizations like 350.org keeping the dream alive. This week on Sea Change Radio, we speak to Namrata Chowdhary, the Head of Public Engagement at 350.org. We learn more about the organization’s roots, examine some of the fights they’ve taken on, and discuss how they’re planning to evolve. We also talk about the corporatization of some larger environmental organizations and dive into the issues surrounding fossil fuel divestiture.

Australia’s 5th Marriage Equality Anniversary

AUSTRALIA’s first gay and lesbian legally married couples are celebrating their fifth anniversaries in January 2024. Of course, the march down the politically-fraught aisle was long and hard. The conservative agenda of Prime Minister John Howard’s Liberal Party saw making the civil institution explicitly heterosexual as a priority, and passed an amendment to the Marriage Act in 2004. Over the next thirteen years, 22 attempts to overturn that law in Parliament failed, while public support for marriage equality grew. Still, the administration of then-Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull opted for a non-compulsory, non-binding mail-in postal vote on the issue. The turning point came in August of 2017. That’s when “This Way Out” SYDNEY correspondent BARRY McKAY picks up the story.
