How to Deal With Nuclear Waste - PSA

For 50 years the NRC has refused to answer the question "What are you going to do with the high level radioactive waste?". By Federal court order they must produce produce an environmental impact statement on storing the high level radioactive waste at reactor sites.
The NRC is trying to cram a 7 year project into two years, while allowing only 3 months for public comment. The NRC had to restart the comment period after it's original notice, calling for public comment, was found to be obscure and cryptic. Public Comments window close January 2, 2013. Key note lecture at A Mountain of Waste 70 Years High: Ending the Nuclear Age Conference held at the University of Chicago December 1-2, 2012. The conference took place just blocks from the makeshift laboratory used to conduct the experiment that produced the worlds first sustained nuclear reaction validating the possibility of an atomic bomb. There were many unknowns in the experiment. Yet out of expedience and hubris the scientist conducted the experiment in Chicago. Tens of thousands of city dwellers were oblivious of the risk to which they were being involuntarily exposed. Such disregard for the people has been a constant through out the nuclear age. From the mining of the ore, the bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, the exposure of service men and civilians to radioactive fall out, to the present catastrophic radiation releases that Three Mile Island, Chernobyl and now Fukushima have demonstrated are ever threatening to catch us off-guard and forever poison the planet.

A report released on November 19 by three public interest groups says that the inquiry led by Wally Oppal was an absolute failure. B.C. Civil Liberties Association, Pivot Legal Society and West Coast LEAF produced the report to offers a set of guidelines for future government inquiries involving marginalized people and communities. Greek Fascism Proliferating under Austerity (Autumn 2012)

The current Greek government led by the center-right New Democracy Party came to power in June vowing to keep Greece on the path of immiserating economic reforms mandated by European Central bankers in exchange for debt relief. Its nearest contender was the opposition Syriza, a coalition of leftist parties challenging the dominant logic of starving society to feed the bankers.
Less noticed, on this side of the Atlantic at least â were the political gains of the neo-fascist Golden Dawn party, which won 18 parliamentary seats on an anti-Europe, anti-immigrant platform. Less noticed, even when its thuggish MPs led phalanxes of blackshirts to physically assault what they called "immigrant scum", with the collusion of the police, and openly called for violence against the state and against political opponents. The U.K. Guardian reported police standing idle while Golden Dawn members beat a journalist at the opening of a gay-themed play, and Athens police arresting and torturing opponents of Golden Dawn.
Meanwhile, new polls show that Golden Dawn is more popular among Greeks than ever, opening new branches throughout the country, and even in New York City. We were joined from London by Maria Margaronis, just back from a 5-day reporting trip to Greece. She broke the story of police torture for the Guardian. That story at and more at:

This original piece was inspired by a hand-sized fragment of crystalline sulphur gathered from the slopes of Mount Aetna, near the place of my birth. It brought forth a remembrance of the story of Empedocles of Akragas, the Sicilian poet, philosopher and healer who was considered by the Roman physician Galen to be the founder of the science of medicine in Italy. Empedocles was born during the remarkable time that brought forth such enlightened beings as Pythagoras, Lao Tzu, Confucius, and Gautama Buddha.
Empedocles generated the doctrine of four elements - air earth, fire and water - as an elaboration of the monism of Parmenides. This notion was to be highly influential in both Western philosophy and in the theory and practice of European medicine for a period of over 2,000 years.
Among his remarkable achievements, Empedocles made life easier for the inhabitants of his native Akragas (present-day Agrigento) by draining the fetid swamps that surrounded the town thereby freeing the population from the scourge of malaria that swept through local communities every year. He also directed a massive engineering project to construct a series of berms which deflected the searing winds of the Saharan Sirocco away from the cultivated fields that supplied the town thereby securing food supplies in the region.
According to legend, Empedocles quietly slipped away from an evening celebration held in his honour at a location near Mount Aetna. A few days later, a search party discovered his bronze sandals placed carefully on the edge of the crater of the erupting volcano.
