A year ago tonight, exactly, Occupy wall street was being evicted from their makeshift home in Zuccotti park.
This is from a post written by Babara Morril on that date a year ago:
In the hours since New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg sent in riot police to clear out Occupy Wall Street protesters from Zuccotti Park, stories of media suppression have been flying.
But this one quote from The New York Times really encapsulates Michael Bloomberg's respect for the First Amendment:
Rosie Gray, a writer for The Village Voice, recounted telling a police officer, âIâm press!â She said the officer responded, âNot tonight.â
We'll just hold off on all those pesky rights until it's more convenient. Or not.
At this hour, a hearing is being held on the temporary restraining order issued earlier this morning that allowed protesters to return to Zuccotti Park. An order that Mayor Bloomberg has ignored. Stay tuned.
I should add that, exactly one year later, the rolling Jubilee, an Occupy Wall street venture raised over $250,000 last night to cancel more than 5 million dollars of outstanding public debt for American citizens.
Looks like Occupy Wall Street is still going strong.

On November 14th, Code Pink marked the 10th anniversary of the start of their 2002-2003 occupation of public space near the White House that lasted 4 months. At 9 AM on Nov 14, 2012, they staged a noisy 9AM antiwar wakeup call for Obama. At noon they staged a mock drone strike on themselves on Capitol Hill, reading out the names of cxhildren and teens killed by US drones.

There is rarely much relation between the real factors motivating political power players to action, and the rhetoric they share during press conferences.
One case in point would be the energy the Harper government in Canada is exerting trying to sell the tar sands in Alberta as a cornerstone of Canada's economic recovery and energy strategy. More oil goes to the United States of America from Canada than from any other country. Is this an advantage for Canada?

Maryam Salah - Inspiration for Hope

Twenty years ago Muhammad Salah was arrested, tortured and imprisoned by the Israeli military for bringing aid to Palestinian relief agencies during the first "Intifada", the uprising that challenged Israeli violence and impunity in Israeli occupied Palestine. Tortured with the complicity of the US government, he confessed to fabricated charges. On his return to the US, after 5 years in an Israeli prison, he was persecuted by the US government for his outspoken commitment to human rights. For 17 years he has been on the Treasury's "special terrorist" list that made any economic activity, unless approved by the US Treasury, a Federal crime. He could not buy his wife flowers or himself a stick of gum with out first obtaining a permission from the Treasury. He was tried in the US on the basis of the statement tortured from him in Israel, in a trial that revealed the US Department of Justice to be debased and prejudiced toward Palestinians. Michael Deutsch, of the People's Law Office and his lawyer, provides the back story.
Through it all, his wife Maryam remained his partner, supporter, a mother, educator and community activist. The recording was made at the American Friends Service Committee Middle East, "Inspiration for Hope Award" presentation to Maryam Salah.
Shortly after the AFSC and the Center for Constitutional Rights filed their law suite challenging the Treasury Department over the 1st and 4th Amendment violations of the special terrorist designation, his name
