Edward Said: Palestine and the Universality of Human Rights (Part ONE of TWO)

This is Saidâs last major speech on Palestine, the war on Iraq and the Bush administration. On September 25, 2003, a message made its way around the world. Edward Said, Palestinian American, world famous professor of English and Comparative Literature at Columbia University, and fearless defender of the Palestinian cause had died of leukemia in New York City, far from the city of Jerusalem where he was born in 1935.
In 1948 Said and his family were forced to leave Palestine for Cairo when the newly founded state of Israel took their ancestral home. Later Said came to the US, studied at Princeton and Harvard and went on to teach at Yale and Columbia. He was not only a renowned academic but also an eloquent spokesperson for Palestinian rights and sovereignty.

Homelessness and mental illness

A far-reaching study in five cities across Canada is looking at what strategies are most effective for stabilizing the lives of homeless people with mental illness. Funding for the project will run out in six months and there has been no sign from the federal government that there will be an extension. Psychologist Julian Somers is lead investigator on the Vancouver team.
Report back on BC's welfare food challenge

Raise the Rates in Vancouver challenged people in BC to try to eat for a week on $26. This represents the amount of money a single able-bodied adult has left for food after theyâve paid for shelter, transit and a cell phone. Redeyeâs Peter Driftmier took the challenge and he comes into the studio to talk about how it went.

Like it or not, genetically engineered foods make up a significant portion of our nation's food supply. Approximately ninety-three percent of all U.S. soy and canola and eighty-six percent of our corn are genetically modified. There are informed positions on both sides of the debate around genetically modified organisms, or GMOs, pertaining to the health and long-term safety of these food products. But many assert that as long as this debate still rages, consumers deserve to know whether they're eating and serving foods that have been genetically modified.
The US is one of the only industrialized nations that does not provide its consumers this assurance. In Europe, all products containing over .9 percent genetically modified organisms must be labeled as GMO products. Similar laws are in 61 other countries, including Japan, Australia and New Zealand. Here in the US, though, there's no such standard. While 14 states have introduced legislation on GMO labeling, the most significant movement on the GMO labeling-front up to this point has been California's Proposition 37, which will be voted on this November 6th. The Proposition, which would allow consumers to make informed choices about what they're eating, has been under fire by a well-funded campaign. The No on 37 assault is backed by major agribusiness corporations who are trying hard to convince voters that adding one line to ingredient labels will significantly increase their food bills.
This week on Sea Change Radio, we speak again to Charles Margulis, the Communications Director for the Center for Environmental Health, a non-profit that has been a staunch supporter of Prop. 37, as well as Ashley Hathaway, a San Francisco-based nutritional therapist who's also an advocate for more transparency in food labeling.

Following last weeks announcement that the Campbell Newman lead LNP Queensland State government would end the 30 yr moratorium on uranium mining in Queensland Autonomous Action Radio investigated the history of uranium mining in this state.
