Gail Stevens, mother of Connor, Cleveland 4 defendant

This week's show features a conversation with Gail Stevens. Gail is the mother of imprisoned activist and anarchist, Connor Stevens, who is one of the four anarchists that the FBI is accusing of attempting to blow up a bridge outside of Cleveland, Ohio. Connor and two other defendants, Brandon Baxter and Doug Wright, have taken a non-cooperating plea deal in the case and face their sentencing hearing on November 5th & 6th of 2012. Joshua Stafford is currently undergoing psychiatric testing to see if he can stand trial. Anthony Hayne took a cooperating plea. During the interview Gail talks about her son, Connor, and offers a different story than what the FBI and even Rolling Stone Magazine have proposed as to what happened leading up to the arrest of the 5 on April 30th of this year. Gail also rips into the poor journalism involved in "The Plot Against Occupy" and tells us what Sabrina R. Erdely got wrong. Growing Support for a One-State Solution for Palestinians and Israelis

Republicans had to do some damage control after Mother Jones magazine published a covert video of Mitt Romney's comments to wealthy donors that a two state solution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict was unrealistic. The video, which was published online on the magazine’s website, provoked handwringing that Romney's remarks could compromise U.S. standing as an "honest broker" in the peace process should Romney become president. But Romney isn’t alone in his doubts about the viability of a two-state solution. A growing number of activists, scholars, and commentators, Palestinian and Israeli, have been declaring that the two-state solution is dead for some time now, based on physical and political realities on the ground in the occupied West Bank. The failure of the Oslo Accords to lead to a negotiated two-state settlement has led to calls for something else: a one-state solution where Palestinians and Jews would live together in full civil and political equality. Government's Vast Electronic Surveillance Dragnet Likely Catching Domestic Communications

The House of Representatives recently voted to reauthorize the FISA Amendments Act, a law originally passed in 2008 that subjects Americans citizens to the government's vast warrantless wiretapping program. Most Americans don’t know that they’re international calls and emails are subject to this program. Even their domestic emails and phone calls can be picked up without a warrant from a judge. The law's proponents don’t seem to know this either. With Julian Sanchez, a Washington, D.C. - based writer and journalist and a Research Fellow at the libertarian Cato Institute.

Israeli-imposed Water Restrictions

Host John Roberts and his guest Samer Jaber discuss the Palestinian water situation. Most Palestinians are forced by Israeli occupation forces to survive (if they can) with 24 quarts of water per person per day. Meanwhile Israeli settlers face no limit, watering their lawns and in some cases even maintaining swimming pools. That's one quart per hour for cooking, cleaning, bathing, and toilet use. Think about this: one flush of one low-flow toilet uses 6 quarts, one-quarter of the daily water allotment. Meanwhile, Israeli soldiers have been shooting holes in Palestinians' rooftop rain collection tanks.

Cambridge Rindge & Latin High School in Cambridge, Massachusetts has an extraordinarily diverse student body that reflects the kaleidoscopic racial, ethnic, and economic composition of the city. With over 1500 students speaking over 64 languages, the school mirrors what our guest calls "the new face of America," with its growing populations of Latinos and Asians, Africans and Afro-Caribbeans, and people of mixed heritage. "More communities across America will increasingly look like this one," he says, yet most people lack the ability to talk intelligently and honestly with each other about race. Our guest is Lawrence Blum, a white college professor who taught a course on Race and Racism at Cambridge Rindge and Latin High School over a span of four years. His new book, High Schools, Race, and America's Future: What Students Can Teach Us About Morality, Diversity, and Community, is the compelling story of what he calls "a remarkable adventure" in teaching – and learning –about race in America, in a multiracial, multi-ethnic classroom.
