Berlet describes that what happened at the Sikh Temple in Wisconsin is both a hate crime and an act of domestic terrorism & discusses what's feeding
white supremacist radicalization. He has written scholarly articles on conspiracy
theories,religious apocalyptic aggression, and organizations of racist groups. Berlet examines major terrorist plots and racist rampages that have emerged from the American radical right in the context of mass media's vilification of a scapegoated group, governmental policing and military policies and the politics of race & gender hierarchies, that stimulate individual and group aggression. Berlet reminds us that whether it be the "lone wolf"or the leaderless resistance cells on the radical right, they can be likened to the mined canaries, warning us of something toxic spreading the fumes of anxiety through our society.

Police Massacre of Striking Mineworkers in Marikana, South Africa

On August 16th, heavily armed police in Marikana, South Africa opened fire on striking mineworkers, reportedly killing over 34 workers in an action reminiscent of the worst days of the apartheid regime. The miners were demanding increases in pay and improved living and working conditions in a nation where poverty, unemployment and inequality persist 18 years after the end of the apartheid system of white rule. The governing African National Congress (ANC), which once represented the hope of equality for all South Africans obliquely condemned the violence but refrained from criticizing the police.

Reflecting on the Aurora murders, we consider the false distinction between "bad guns" and "good guns." Murders by police of unarmed citizens (some while in handcuffs). Massive killing of civilians overseas in our "War on Terror." And a President who claims the legal right to kill anyone he chooses--even US citizens--without charges or trial. And does.
How can we condemn the RETAIL violence in Aurora while supporting the WHOLESALE violence at the heart of US domestic and foreign policy?
