John Cage's "Variations VII"

Sept. 13, 2023, 7:09 p.m.
"All Things Cage" is a weekly program featuring conversations between Laura Kuhn, Director of the John Cage Trust, and Cage experts and enthusiasts from around the world. If youd like to propose a guest or a topic for a future program, write directly to Laura at lkuhn@johncage.org.Laura Kuhn presents the first recording of John Cages Europera 5, preceded by her reading Recollections of the Premiere Performance by Yvar Mikhashoff. This recording of Europera 5 was produced by Brian Brandt and released on the Mode Records label as Mode 36 in 1995, with performers Yvar Mikhashoff, Martha Herr, Gary Burgess, Jan Williams, and Don Metz. Europera 5 is the last and most diminutive of Cages operas " preceded by Europeras 1 & 2 (1984-1987) and Europeras 3 & 4 (1991) " and was instigated by pianist Yvar Mikashoffs desire for a small, more practical and portable, and more easily performed work in the series, which had its premiere in Buffalo at the North American New Musical Festival on April 12, 1991.

Welcome to "The Radio Art Hour," a show where art is not just on the radio, but is the radio. "The Radio Art Hour" draws from the Wave Farm Broadcast Radio Art Archive, an online resource that aims to identify, coalesce, and celebrate historical and contemporary international radio artworks made by artists around the world, created specifically for terrestrial AM/FM broadcast, whether it be via commercial, public, community, or independent transmission. Come on a journey with us as radio artists explore broadcast radio space through poetic resuscitations and playful celebrations/subversions of the complex relationship between senders and receivers in this hour of radio about radio as an art form. "The Radio Art Hour" features introductions from Philip Grant and Tom Roe, and from Wave Farm Radio Art Fellows Karen Werner, Andy Stuhl, Jess Speer, and Jos Alejandro Rivera. The Conet Project's recordings of numbers radio stations serve as interstitial sounds. Go to wavefarm.org for more information about "The Radio Art Hour" and Wave Farm's Radio Art Archive.

Totally Bananas

"Turn On The News" is the weekly newscast from the fictional Radio Network, with parody radio coverage of the radio and its headlines. Now with computerized news readers, and fewer meddling reporters, plus aggregated reporting, and automated music. Tune in "Turn On The News" each week for the latest news, radio art, and more from our robot reporters, making sure you hear both sides -- good and evil -- every time you "Turn On The News." The show airs at 3 p.m. Thursdays on WGXC, and also most weeks on WGRN, WRWK, KFUG, KACR, KRFP-LP, KMSW, and many other stations. Produced by Tom Roe at Wave Farm and WGXC. The Environmental Impacts of Large Dams and Reservoirs with Patrick McCully updated Archive

Sept. 13, 2023, 3:12 a.m.
This is the second part of a program on the epic struggle over dams, displaced people and the environment, that I recorded for TUC Radio in 2006. Patrick McCully was then the executive director of the International Rivers Network. They are supporting communities around the world that are impacted by destructive dams. On their 2023 website International Rivers Network dot org list 217 dam projects around the world that they have helped delay or stop. Globally the building of mega dam-projects is slowing down but the world is left with dams and reservoirs that are decaying and becoming a danger to people downstream. Just this morning, as I’m preparing this program for distribution, terrible news is coming in from Libya: The subtropical cyclone "Daniel" hit eastern Libya yesterday and floods from heavy rains overtopped the reservoirs of two dams south of the city of Derna. Both dams were destroyed and the flood swept entire neighborhoods with people, houses and bridges into the Mediterranean. (Included is a 43 sec. clip from Sky News from September 12, 2023) Patrick McCully was then a member of the UN Environment Programme’s Dams & Development Project. He was a co-editor of The Ecologist magazine in England, and is the author of Silenced Rivers: The Ecology and Politics of Large Dams. Patrick McCully joined Reclaim Finance in 2021 as Energy Transition Senior Analyst.

Zelensky's record shows he is anti-democratic and anti-union

Sept. 13, 2023, 1:55 a.m.
The USA is bragging that new super-lethal cluster bombs are working in Ukraine, while also claiming that Russia, too, is using them. But Russia condemns their use while noting that they reserve the right to respond in kind. On the political front western media do not mention that Zelensky's government has banned the major opposition party, and 10 others. And Zelensky has stripped 70-percent of Ukrainian workers of union representation. This has been documented by unions in Europe, but there has been no action or complaint by the CLC or the AFL-CIO. Anti-war activists must bring these matters to the forefront.

Our second episode is focused on how governmental support, funding, artists, and audiences have changed and what arts and cultural organizations are doing to support, reinvent, and invigorate the sector. Join us to learn about various angles of this work and how you can get engaged.

Tennis Anyone? James Martinez on Tennis Ball Waste

Sept. 12, 2023, 10:56 p.m.
Did you know that over 100,000 tennis balls are used in an average grand slam tournament? And unfortunately, they cannot be recycled. Given the plethora of tennis matches played across the globe in an average year, we are talking about roughly 330 million tennis balls going into landfills annually. This week on Sea Change Radio, we speak with Associated Press reporter, James Martinez, an avid tennis fan and player, who serves up some insight into tennis ball manufacturing, this waste issue, and some of the creative efforts to help solve the problem – and show the planet a little love.

Classic lesbian poets Emily Dickinson and Audre Lorde are targeted by 2023 book bans; Hong Kong’s top court orders “marriage like” legal rights for queer couples, while the European Court of Human Rights orders similar “separate but equal” recognition of a Bulgarian lesbian couple’s civil marriage, Texas’ top court lifts a ban on the enforcement of the state’s pediatric trans healthcare ban, while a federal district court judge yields on blocking Georgia’s trans healthcare ban, and California’s Attorney General successfully blocks trans student “outings” - for now. Episode 533: That's not a real Saison

Sept. 11, 2023, 6:54 p.m.
SUDS Episode – One of our co-hosts passed away about a year ago and we decided to host a episode in tribute to Good ol Boy Caperton. We still really miss him and drinking beer with him. He was fanatical about Saison style beers and was very polarized about his feedback. Brewers feared his wrath if they ventured too far off his declarative boundaries of a true Saison. Some of these we got to enjoy with Caperton before he passed away and others we wish we could have shared with him.

Promo for Falling Into Autumn

Falling Into Autumn

Sept. 11, 2023, 4:11 p.m.
Its fall in the northern hemisphere and we explore the science behind autumn. Equinoxes happen in the spring and fall, and each year those special days give our planet exactly 12 hours of day and 12 hours of night at the equator. At the Chichen Itza pyramid in Yucatan, Mexico, a snake is visible climbing down the steps only on spring and fall equniox. We also hear from 5th graders at Eugene Field Elementary School in Albuquerque, New Mexico describing how perspective can change history. They teach us about the traditional fall holidays of Labor Day (US), Mexican Independence Day (Mexico), and Columbus Day (US), and how each of these holidays feels very different based on the point of view in history a person takes. Mrs. Allison Hawks taught these intrepid students back in 2014 for a Title 1 School Project with The Childrens Hour. Filled with great music, this episode educates, entertains, and engages kids of all ages. Join us as we fall into autumn on The Childrens Hour. This episode was recorded and produced at the Sunspot Solar Studio in Albuquerque, New Mexico. Christina Stella is our Senior Producer, Katie Stone is our Executive Producer. Many thanks to Alli Hawks and her 2014 fifth grade class at Eugene Field Elementary School for joining us on the show. 2023 The Childrens Hour Inc.
