A Peace That's Always Torn

With Blood on the Tracks Bob Dylan could no longer be identified solely as a figure from the 1960s. The album is so well done that if it had been his first album and the 60s material did not exist, he would still be considered the major rock songwriter of the 20th Century. It is the album in which he became a conscious artist, and it has been the standard by which all of his career has been measured. It is a series of songs about examining the past in order to move forward, with the immediate goal of reaching out to his wife Sara, with whom he had become estranged. In 1974, after his comeback U.S. tour -- which had been such a financial but not personal success -- Dylan decided to concentrate on his painting and began studying with 73-year-old teacher Norman Raeben.

A professor at Carleton University, Marcelo Saavedra is an Indigenous Bolivian leader and founder of the Bolivia Action Solidarity Network.
He speaks to Latin Waves about his inspiring students who have written a new Constitution for this young legal entity called Canada. He speaks about how Occupy Ottawa has changed its name to Occupied Ottawa in relation to colonialism. He also speaks of this notion of rights and how the idea of Hope disenfranchises us and what we really
need is to simply act and rely on indigenous knowledge and ways of being.

Author Dr. Jon Thompson, journalists Bruce Wark and Miles Howe, Jane MacMillan of
Canadians, Arabs and Jews for a Just Peace, which is sponsoring the event.
Dr. Thompson is Professor emeritus of mathematics and statistics, University of New
Brunswick and the author of the recent book, âNo Debate: The Israel Lobby and Free
Speech at Canadian Universitiesâ. He was Chair of the independent investigation of the
unfair treatment of medical researcher Dr. Nancy Olivieri at Sick Children's Hospital, Toronto
and wrote the Olivieri report.
Bruce Wark is a freelance journalist and retired journalism professor who now lives in
Parrsboro. He taught the history and ethics of journalism at the University of King's College in
Halifax for 15 years. Before that, he worked for 19 years at CBC Radio news serving as a
producer in charge of such network programs as World at Six, World Report and The House.
He also produced Media File, a national program that looked critically at the performance of
the news media.
Miles Howe is a Halifax-based freelance journalist who covered the Canadian Boat to Gaza
and whose CBC Radio interview and feature article in The Coast generated considerable
reaction.
Jane MacMillan is a member of the Halifax organization Canadians, Arabs and Jews for a
Just Peace that conducts local educational events and speaking events on the Middle East.

Marcy Winograd was a leading Democratic Party activist in Los Angeles, nearly elected to Congress as a Democrat herself. She has renounced that party and become a Green. Her positions on public policy have not changed. She is still a leading peace activist in Southern California. Winograd discusses her change of party and approaches to activism in an election year. Winograd is a teacher with much to say about counter-recruitment in a time of ubiquitous militarism.

Doc Watson (March 3, 1923 - May 29, 2012) in 1939.
We had decided to honor Doc, as he was doing poorly and in the hospital; we just heard that he has passed on, his family by his side.
It's hard to overestimate the impact that Doc had on bluegrass, old time, blues, and spiritual music in America and beyond.
Today we truly lost an American icon and legend.

Syria: Is Military Intervention a Good Idea?

On May, 29, 2012 I interviewed Dr. Stephen Zunes about why he continues to oppose a military intervention in Syria. We also discussed the Bashar al-Assad regime, the nature of the pro-democracy movement and the armed resistance in Syria, as well as the role that the U.S., Russia, China and the United Nations have played in relation to the uprising in Syria. Dr. Stephen Zunes is one of the leading scholars of U.S. Middle East policy and of strategic nonviolent action, and a Professor of Politics and International Studies at the University of San Francisco, where he chairs the program in Middle Eastern Studies. Dr. Zunes also serves as a senior policy analyst for Foreign Policy in Focus, a project of the Institute for Policy Studies, and is chair of the academic advisory committee for the International Center on Nonviolent Conflict.
