Pilgrim Nuclear Power Fight Heats Up in Massachusetts

Political fallout from the Fukushima nuclear disaster is fueling local opposition to the Pilgrim Nuclear Reactor in Plymouth, Massachusetts. The aging facility's operating license expires on June 8, 2012, and its owners want a 20-year extension.
- It looked like it had a green light from the Nuclear Regulatory Commission, which recommended an approval vote. But out of nowhere, local opposition to the license grew and spread from town to town, stiffening the backs of state and Congressional representatives, the state Attorney General, and the Governor, who urged the NRC to deny the vote until outstanding public safety and environmental concerns can be resolved.
- The organizers of that remarkable effort join us for this interview. With South Shore activists Anna Baker and Pine Dubois of the Pilgrim Coalition, and Paul Gunter of the DC-based group, Beyond Nuclear.

May Day began in the U.S. in 1886 as a nationwide general strike, which was led by immigrant workers, fighting for the 8 hour work day. While celebrated across the globe, it has been largely ignored in the U.S., until recently, when immigrant workers revived it.
Now, a new chapter in the history of May Day was written with the involvement of Occupy Wall Street, the organization making history with its public encampments and protests against the global financial community. And, Building Bridges presente!
We were there for this new chapter in the movement, reporting from May Day events throughout the day.
We spiced those events with commentary and analysis on the struggles of the working class in the midst of capitalist crisis and prospects for change, from leading champions of the working class, who build organization and class consciousness.
Occupy with Building Bridges as we acknowledge the blood, sweat and tears of workers, the workers who really create all the wealth and want it back. So, lock arms, unite and fight for the working class, for the 99%.

Gerard Manley Hopkins. A Lament for the Destruction of the Natural World

The Jesuit priest/poet Gerard Manley Hopkins is remembered for his exquisite use of language and the depth of his poetic regard. Binsley Poplars was written in 1879 in response to his shocking discovery that a favourite stand of aspen trees which he had long enjoyed during his days at Oxford had fallen to the axe. At another level, the poem is a lament for the destruction of the natural world without thought for the beauties that it holds and without regard for the blighting of the landscape itself and of our minds when we behold such devastation.
Hopkins is acutely aware of the irreversibility of such assaults upon the natural world, and laments the loss to future generations of the mystic entrancement evoked by scenes of natural beauty.
Though written over 130 years ago, Binsley Poplars is presciently anthemic of the present day Green movement and of environmentalism more generally.

Harvard Law professor Lawrence Lessig brilliantly discusses the many ways that our Congress is corrupt. Some of his examples surprised even me. His October 2011 lecture in Seattle--based on his book "Republic, Lost"--combined an excellent discussion of the problem with (IMHO) a long-shot, pie-in-the-sky solution (a Constitutional Convention to establish campaign finance reform). Our condensed version of the talk focuses on the problem.
