MaryCarl Guiao is a community organizer with a volunteer-run migrant worker advocacy group in Guelph, Ontario called Fuerza/Puwersa*. Guiao speaks about the 4th annual "Status for all!" May Day Potluck & Panel in Guelph, Ontario and criticizes the myriad wrongs of the Canadian immigration system.
* "Fuerza" and "Puwersa" both mean "strength" in Spanish and Tagalog, respectively. Spanish and Tagalog are the languages spoken by the majority of the people that Fuerza/Puwersa provides support to on-the-ground.

Richmond, California is one of the many communities in America where economic and environmental injustice intersect. A waterfront city in the San Francisco Bay Area, you might expect it to be dominated by affluence and comfort, but youâd be mistaken. Back in 1901 Standard Oil moved in, and built what currently operates as the Chevron Richmond Refinery, and since then, the city of Richmond has literally grown up in the shadow of the smokestacks. Chevron has not been the most responsible of neighbors, and those of us who have lived in the Bay Area for a while canât help but associate Richmond with chemical leaks and warnings for residents not to leave their homes. But this week's guest on Sea Change Radio has an inspiring story of a community coming together to blow back at the smokestack. Host Alex Wise speaks with Greg Karras, a senior scientist at Communities for a Better Environment, an organization that advocates for working-class communities like Richmond that donât have the money or political influence to fight Big Oil by themselves.
Richard Heinberg: The End of Growth (TWO of TWO)

Richard Heinberg may be best known for his appearance in the movie: The End of Suburbia that made it clear that the American Dream and the American urban geography are entirely dependent on abundant fossil fuels. That film inspired many to look for ways to strengthen local communities under a new concept: the Transition Town movement. The Mendocino Coast Transition Towns movement invited Heinberg in December 2011 to celebrate the release of his most recent book: The End of Growth.
In this part TWO continues his argument on depletion - not just of fossil fuels.

Interviews Dr Adrienne Pine Honduras/Feminist resistance

Adrienne Pine is a militant medical anthropologist who has worked in Honduras, Mexico, Korea, the United States, and Egypt. In her book, Working Hard, Drinking Hard: On Violence and Survival in Honduras, she argues that the symbolic violence resulting from Honduransâ embodied obsession with certain forms of 'real' violence is a necessary condition for the acceptance of violent forms of modernity and capitalism. Dr. Pine has worked both outside and inside the academy to effect a more just world. Prior to and following the June 2009 military coup in Honduras, she has collaborated with numerous organizations and individuals to bring international attention to the Honduran struggle to halt the state violence (in its multiple forms).
She speaks to Sylvia about the ongoing institutionalized violence in Honduras that is escalating since the Coup, how it targets women and other marginalized groups. How the women are becoming a force to contend with and what North American Feminist can learn from this struggle.
