Sheldon Birnie on hog plants and foreign labour

Southwestern Manitoba is an international centre for pig farming and food processing. The Maple Leaf plant in Brandon and the Hylife plant in Neepawa employ mostly foreign workers, who don't have the same rights as domestic workers, through Canada's temporary foreign worker program. Sheldon Birnie is a Winnipeg writer who wrote "Living the HyLife: How meat packers are fuelling migration to Manitoba towns", in briarpatchmagazine.com, and "Hogtown, Manitoba", in dominionpaper.ca.

Tarek Mehanna & the Criminalization of Free Speech

U.S. citizen Tarek Mehanna was sentenced to 17 years in a supermax prison. Having watched his country invade Iraq and kill thousands of Muslims, in his 20s he spoke against the U.S. war. To critics of the case, it appears he was convicted essentially for translating publicly available text and videos from Arabic, for visiting Yemen without finding a mujahedin training camp, and for declining to become an FBI informant against a friend whom Mehanna had counselled against violence. The FBI built the case against Mehanna using the friend's testimony, and in exchange the friend was not charged. Fuerza/Puwersa's 4th Annual May Day Potluck PSA

Come learn about how communities are responding to the increasingly discriminatory immigration policies affecting working class im/migrants and refugees. For the last 3 years this event has brought together speakers from both outside of Guelph as well as members from our surrounding community to speak about their experience and work challenging discriminatory, racist and violent policies of exclusion in their various forms affecting working class im/migrant and refugee communities. This event provides the opportunity to learn about, discuss and plan future work and solidarity work around im/migrant justice, while also celebrating the achievements and strengths of communities through music, entertainment, and collectively-made delicious dinner. Please join us for our fourth year! Guest speakers at this year's celebration include: Juan, who works under Canada's SAWP; Melissa Paciulan, whose work calls attentions to the wide impact that migration has on the families of migrant farm workers; and Romero House's Lizzie Neale and Teresa Edge. This is a free event. The 10 Carden Street space is wheelchair accessible except for the washroom, but we are in the process of confirming accessible options. Another Police Killing in Newburgh, N.Y

Community Seeks Justice For Michael Lembhard, The Latest African-American Youth To Die By The Hands Of Newburgh Police With Lillie Howard, community activist whose grandson was killed by Newburgh police and Juanita King, cousin of Michael Lembhard, killed by Newburgh police Anger still rages in the latest police killing on March 7, Newburgh, NY of Michael Lembhard. Governor Cuomo has turned down Newburgh's request for a special prosecutor in the fatal shooting.Newburg's Mayor Judy Kennedy meanwhile told a community forum that she and the City Council will await an Orange County grand jury's verdict before deciding whether to consider any disciplinary action of their own in the police shooting death of Lembhard. Meanwhile, the officers involved remain on administrative leave. The community has been relentless in its pursuit of justice for Lembhard, vowing never to let it happen again - too many young people are being lost and Lembhard's death is the latest in what they claim is due to police discrimination and brutality towards the African American community. The community hopes that Lembhard's death will lead to a federal probe of the police department in Newburgh.

# 179: If You Love This Planet: Guest - Glenn Carroll

This week, Dr. Caldicott interviews long-time antinuclear activist Glenn Carroll, coordinator of Nuclear Watch South, headquartered in Atlanta, GA. Carroll has been committed to grass roots direct action for 25 years, ever since the 1986 Chernobyl meltdown in Russia inspired her to join efforts to stop Vogtle 1 and 2, a nuclear power plant in Waynesboro, Georgia. With a small group of volunteers, Carroll led Nuclear Watch South to shut the research reactor on the Georgia Tech campus in downtown Atlanta where the Olympic athletes were to be housed. She is the 2008 recipient of the Tides Foundation's Jane Bagley Lehmann award. In this conversation with Dr. Caldicott, Carroll explains the danger posed by the third and fourth reactors approved for construction at the Vogtle facility, and how utility company Georgia Power and the Nuclear Regulatory Commission are overriding concerns about the environment and human health in order to built the first new nuclear power plants in the U.S. in several decades.
