The Mother of All Strikes: Botswana 2011

You probably didn't read about it in the paper, but last spring, more than 90,000 public employees in Botswana walked out on a record-breaking two month strike. Pnina Werbner, professor emerita of social anthropology at Keele University in the UK, was there, and she joined us in the studio to talk about it. She is working on a book on the Manual Workers Union and other public sector unions in Botswana, and she visited Portland to give a talk at Reed College entitled "The Mother of All Strikes: Popular Protest Culture and Vernacular Cosmopolitanism in the Botswana Public Service Unions' Strike, 2011." She came into the KBOO studio to talk with host Al Bradbury about how the workers employed playful songs and other creative tactics to sustain their unity over the period, how they related their struggle to the anti-authoritarian and anti-austerity popular uprisings in many countries that year, and the political and social impacts of the strike.

Have you ever wondered where your recyclable paper goes after you place it in the bin at the curb in Portland? As it turns out, most of it is shipped off to China for reprocessing. Local paper mill workers are asking, why not process it locally and create local jobs? And how can we hold our legislators accountable for those choices? Host Bill Zimmerman speaks with Steve Hughes, State Director of Oregon Working Families Party, and Greg Pallesen, International Vice President of the Association of Western Pulp and Paper Workers, to talk about this issue and the sad fate of HB 4142 in this year's legislative session. Later in the show, Bill is joined by Kedir Wako, chair of the Portland Drivers Self Help Association, to talk about conditions in the taxi industry and why workers are organizing to support themselves and one another.

Diana Buttu is a Palestinian-Canadian lawyer and former spokesperson with the Negotiations Support Unit of the Palestine Liberation Organization. She has worked as a legal adviser and negotiator on peace negotiations between Israeli and Palestinian organizations and has appeared numerous times on Fox News, CNN, and MSNBC.
Ms. Buttu received a B.A. in Middle East and Islamic Studies and an LL.M. from the University of Toronto, a J.D. from Queen's University Faculty of Law, a J.S.M. from Stanford Law School, and an M.B.A. from the Kellogg School of Management at Northwestern University. She is currently a fellow with the Middle East Initiative at the Belfer Center and an Eleanor Roosevelt visiting fellow at the Human Rights Program at Harvard Law School.

Protest Demands NY's MTA Brings Back Laid Off Workers

TWU Local 100, elected officials, and community supporters called on the MTA to use nearly $500 million dollars in its GASB 45 Fund to restore services cut in 2010, and to rehire over 120 laid-off Station Agents, and settle a fair contract for 38,000 TWU Local 100 members. According to MTA budget documents, the agency holds approximately $489 million in a reserve fund called the GASB 45 Fund (Government Accounting Standards Board). Since 2006, the MTA has been depositing tens of millions of dollars every year in this account. Even in 2010, when bus and subway services were reduced or eliminated al-together, the MTA stashed money away instead of drawing from its reserve fund to avoid service cuts.

More people were living in poverty last year
than in any year since the Census Bureau began keeping records half a century ago, while the richest 1% has tripled its wealth and corporations are being bailed out without giving back. The Line, a creative action stretching arms and joining together to say, No to Pink Slips, Yes to Government and Business Putting America Back to Work!

SubGenius artist KRK Ryden turned me on to this a few years ago, and it made an episode of BSTF worth bringing out into the light again-- the Droplift Project. This guerilla underground music movement began in 2000 and is continuing today. "Droplifting" is the reverse of shoplifting --a baffling noncrime to make a statement about copyright and commercialism. On July 28, 2000, operatives of the movement slipped into retail record stores, slipped this well-packaged compilation disc of their own into the racks, and then slipped out again, creating ripples of WTF mayhem in their wake.

"The Pearl. Seven Hymns on the Faith" was written by the 4th Century theologian, mystic, poet and wonder-worker, Ephraim of Syria. Among other things, this beautiful poem presents an artful statement of the nature of scrying and offers a remarkable opening into the sources of imaginal vision.
This poetic/musical interpretation of Part I of "The Pearl" was developed from the original J.B. Morris translation of 1898.

This audio program offers a 6th anniversary remembrance of the death by knifing of Australian musician Darren Jones who was killed in an unprovoked attack while returning home from classes at the Victorian College of the Arts on February 23rd 2006.
This presentation was developed from a series of depth interviews with 11 people - most of them fellow musicians - who were part of Darren Jones' intimate circle. It explores the effects of such a horrifying event on a community of artists and friends and details the slow and painful process of healing that follows such an existential collapse.

Thomas C. Mountain was one of the first to follow-up on the stories of "African mercenaries" in Libya, where he suggested that such rumors would bring vicious consequences for black Libyans. New bill to bar active union members from college boards

Last November BC Minister of Advanced Education, Naomi Yamamoto, introduced Bill 18. Buried within the bill is a provision that could bar instructors and staff who are active in their unions from sitting on college governance boards. Phillip Legg is a staff representative with the Federation of Pos-Secondary Instructors.
