Understanding the roots of the violence in Mexico

President Calderon launched his war on drugs shortly after he came into office in December 2006. He brought the army out onto the streets and began a campaign of confrontation with drug cartels that has caused widespread violence throughout the country. Laura Carlsen is director of the Americas Program for the Center for International Policy in Mexico City.
Hospitals in B.C. funded based on number of surgeries performed

Premier Christy Clark has introduced activity-based funding to hospitals in B.C. despite evidence from other countries that this kind of model neither saves costs nor reduces waiting lists. Marcy Cohen is author of Beyond the Hospital Walls, a new report on hospital funding, published by the Canadian Centre for Policy Alternatives.
Development funds go to mitigate impact of Canadian mining companies overseas

A new program of the Canadian International Development Agency is funding Canadian non-governmental organizations to help local populations deal with the impact of Canadian mining companies in their communities. Gwendolyn Schulman says this kind of relationship will impact the ability of NGOs to advocate for the people they serve. Schulman is co-host of Amandla, Canada's longest-running African affairs radio program.
