BSTF 899 - The "Some Velvet Susans" Show

Yep! Tonight, over and over, is "Some Velvet Morning" -- but it's not my fault! I looked up an old childhood friend who is also named Susan, and later she sent me a ceedee she put together of different versions of that freak Lee Hazlewood's classic bit of unaccountable meter-shifting psychedelic weirdness. (I guess that means she "gets" me!) The show starts out with a prank call that I made, and therein lies a small explanation. There was an ad on Craigslist calling for volunteers to take a trip to the planet Serpo. I couldn't resist answering it even though it had been taken down within hours of when I discovered it--but I had printed it out, and there was a phone number. (Of course when I called it and spoke to the answering machine, I was recording my end of it--but in my haste and performance anxiety, I forgot to turn the goddamned mike on. DAMMITDAMMITDAMMIT! So I had to recreate the call-since I had basically scripted out what I wanted to say, it was easy. But boy, that misstep pissed me off. And I never heard back from the guy mentioned in the ad, who doubtless was getting pranked by some fuckers he knew.)

Break The Stereo- Living for the Funk

Verizon Dodges All Taxes

TAXES, WE DON’T PAY NO STINKIN' TAXES SAYS VERIZON, AS THE 99% CRIES FOUL! With The Tax Dodgers, OWS Occupy the Boardroom, United NY, Make the Road NY, Strong Economy for All, NY Communities for Change, Vocal New York, C.W.A., 99% NY, and other members of the 99% Verizon Communications has been identified as one of the country’s worst tax dodgers. Between 2008 - 2010, Verizon actually received $951 million net in federal tax refunds, our public dollars, making their effective federal tax rate average to 3% or less. So, an outraged coalition decided to “occupy” Verizon headquarters to call attention to the fact that corporations like Verizon, GE, Bank of America, and others are not paying their fair share of taxes, juxtaposed with a time when the minimum wage is too low to permit people to pay their bills and feed their families. The occupiers came to say corporate ‘tax dodgers’ like Verizon, that made over $25 billion in pre-tax US income, and paid $173 million in compensation to their top five executives, with $56 million going to their CEO alone – and spending $52 million for lobbying was obscene while at the same time, since 2008 laying off 20,000 employees. Meanwhile, in the midst of the occupation, a new sports franchise, the “Tax Dodgers” had the audacity to show up. One of the players, claiming to be former Verizon CEO Ivan Seidenberg introduced the “Tax Dodgers,” who he explained symbolized the lobbyists and other groups who likely received a portion of the money that Verizon saved in taxes, while the occupiers cried foul. Tune in to hear the response of the 99%ers to Verizon and to the Tax Dodgers, who demonstrated their agility at stealing bases!

How GM Kicks Occupationally Disabled Workers to the Curb in Colombia

GM assembly workers in Colombia suffer occupational disabilities resulting from outdated equipment and production methods, then the company forces them out of their jobs. The workers and their families fight back by occupying a spot right across the street from the US embassy. In November they spoke with a Witness for Peace delegation about their struggle for justice.

Longshore Workers in the Fight, from Longview, Washington to Buenaventura, Colombia

Tonight's show features the current struggles of workers in two ports. First we speak with Dan Coffman, President of ILWU Local 21, about the Longview workers' courageous fight against the transnational corporation EGT, and how their community has mobilized and braved police brutality to stand up for good local jobs. Then we hear John Walsh's interview with longshore workers of Unión Portuaria in Buenaventura, Colombia, talking about the conditions in which they live and work, and their own workplace struggles.

Labor Strife at OSPIRG

Two progressive advocacy groups, OSPIRG, the Oregon State Public Interest Research Group, and Environment Oregon, are experiencing labor strife. Today, outside the call center for the Fund for the Public Interest, at the Portland Telephone Outreach Project, where telephone workers fundraise for these two groups, union activists staged an informational picket. KBOO labor reporter Jamie Partridge has the story.

Longshore Battle Looms in Longview

The Interntional Longshore and Warehouse Union (ILWU) local 21 in Longview, Washington has put out the call to all working class people to come to Longview for an historic protest. EGT, a giant multi-natiional corporation which controls one-third of the world's grain trade, is trying to bust the ILWU, one of America's most progressive and powerful unions. EGT's first grain ship will be docking soon, escorted by the U.S. Coast Guard. Host Jamie Partridge interviews Meredith Reese from the Labor Solidarity Committee of OCCUPY Portland about organizing for this pivotal battle of the 99% vs the 1%.

Longshore workers in Longview, Washington are fighting an historic battle to save their union, the International Longshore and Warehouse Union (ILWU) local 21. EGT, a huge multinational grain trading corporation, is trying to load the first ship at their new high tech terminal with non-ILWU scab labor. Host Jamie Partridge interviews OCCUPY Portland spokesperson, Kari Koch, about the massive caravan now being organized in response to the call from local 21 for solidarity.

Extrajudicial Executions in Colombia

Participants in the Movement of Victims of Crimes of the State describe extrajudicial executions, also known as "false positives," in which the US-funded Colombian armed forces murdered civilians - often young men looking for work - in order to present their bodies as evidence of military success in the internal armed conflict. One of the speakers lost her brother, another her son, to such killings.

Kris Humbird and his coworkers at the Fund for the Public Interest call center -- which raises funds for OSPIRG and Environment Oregon -- formed a union with CWA Local 7901 this past October. Kris joined us in studio to talk about the job he loves, the trouble with fundraising quotas, and the ugly union-busting side of these beloved progressive organizations. If Kris and his coworkers are taking one step towards a voice in their workplace, John Langley and his coworkers at the Red and Black Cafe have taken it a step farther: They own and run the restaurant themselves, as a worker-owned cooperative. John joined us by phone to talk about life without a boss.
