What is the United States Chamber of Commerce? Many Americans hold the misconception that it's a government agency. It is not. It is the most significant lobbying group in the United States. And, as our guests today on Sea Change Radio explain, it's a formidable foe of environmental protections and could easily be called an organized group for pollution-advocacy.
This week, host Alex Wise talks with environmental ethicist Philip Cafaro, who explains the role that the US Chamber of Commerce plays in promoting constant growth, and how that premise inherently contradicts environmental sustainability. Next, Shaun Goho, lawyer and lecturer at Harvard Law School, dissects the US Chamber of Commerce's own statement on environmental issues and demonstrates how its current policies diverge drastically from the Chamber's 19th Century roots.
Use of drones growing dramatically

Drones are robotic aircraft that can carry arms but are also for surveillance. Currently one in every three aircraft in the United States is a drone and over 50 countries have some form of unmanned aircraft. Trevor Timm is an activist and blogger for the Electronic Frontier Foundation. He has been following the development of drones and recently wrote an article for Al Jazeera on the subject.

Palestinian citizens of Israel face systematic discrimination

Most people think that the struggle between Israel and the Palestinians began in 1967 with the occupation of Gaza, the West Bank and Jerusalem. Ali Abunimah says that leaves out the 1.4 million Palestinians who are citizens of Israel proper. He says they face discrimination on par with that experienced by African-Americans prior to the civil rights movement. Ali Abunimah is author of One Country: A Bold Proposal to End the Israeli-Palestinian Impasse.

We live today in a world shaped by capitalism. The force of the markets determine our political, social and economic realities. This world which we now take for granted is actually quite new to history. It is only within the last two hundred years that capitalism is the prevalent economic system for most of the world's population. But capitalism did not arise out of nothing. Historian Henry Heller argues in his new book, The Birth of Capitalism: A Twenty-First Century Perspective, that capitalism grew out of feudalism in Europe over a long period of three hundred years through struggles among the various classes that made up that society.
