Graham Sinclair is a South African sustainable investment consultant and the President of the Africa Sustainable Investment Forum. Money managers like him attract conscientious investors, using the tools of capitalism to pressure corporations to be more socially responsible. Today, Sinclair talks about the past and future of sustainable investing, and what it means for corporations, investors and consumers. Host Alex Wise also discusses with Sinclair the particular importance of socially responsible investment strategies in developing countries.

Christopher Hitchens: The Trial of Henry Kissinger (TWO of TWO)

Hitchens died on December 15, 2011. His work on the war crimes of Henry Kissinger may be his most enduring. This is the fact filled and funny Q/A section recorded in the Fall of 2001 in San Francisco at a book release party for: The Trial of Henry Kissinger. Hitchens discusses whether Nixon and Kissinger stole the elections of 1968, offers additional information on Kissinger's role in Israel, Palestine, and Cyprus, and reviews some of the instruments of international law that may be used to bring war criminals to trial.

Forest action network joins Chiquita in battle against tar-sands

Recently the Chiquita banana company said it would work with environmental group Forest Ethics in banning the use of tar-sands oil in their shipping. Chiquita has since said it is not boycotting any tar-sands oil but the story brings up important issues in terms of what political bedfellows you keep.

Sanctions in Eritrea, unspoken biographies for Havel and Hitchens

Thomas Mountain is in a part of the world that has a lot of combat - this episode, he discusses the U.S.-driven sanctions against Eritrea. In the second half of the program, Stephen Gowans assesses the current situation in the Koreas after the death of Kim Jong-il. Despite worries over the North's leadership transition, Gowans asserts that the leaders of the U.S. and South Korea are the ones driving the tensions. Phil and Gowans also revisit elements of Vaclav Havel's biography that are left out of the official remembrances.
The hosts also pass on assessments of Christopher Hitchens, made by Alexander Cockburn and Norman Finkelstein.

The global environment has become heavily contaminated with persistent organic pollutants (POPs). It has gradually become evident that POPs exposure at current levels of food supply contamination is a major contributor to chronic disease causation. Populations with unusually high POPs exposure are at a high priority for POPs exposure minimization educational outreach.
Monsanto Corporation began manufacturing PCBs in the 1930s. PCBs were used in a considerable number of products and applications over the course of the period of their use. Window caulking once contained PCBs. Fluorescent lighting fixtures manufactured during the PCB use era contain PCBs in their capacitors. The air inside buildings that have PCBs in the window caulking and in their fluorescent lights is contaminated with a
significant quantity of PCBs. The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has been involved in addressing air quality issues at New York City schools where indoor air PCB contamination exists.
Dr. Mark Maddaloni is an EPA scientist with expert knowledge in quantitative risk assessment. He has been involved in the effort to minimize PCB exposures in New York City schools. Dr. Maddaloni describes the implementation of remedial measures that has led to reduced PCB levels in indoor air.
In seeking to minimize the harm caused by the toxic chemical exposures of a given population, it is important to take into account total exposure to similar substances. PCBs are a subset of the POPs. Children who encountered respiratory PCB exposure in New York City schools have been exposed to POPs as a result of consuming animal fats, all of which are contaminated with POPs.
The World Health Organization (WHO) published, "Persistent Organic Pollutants: Impact on Child Health" in 2010. This policy document recommends that leaders in the health arena take action to minimize the exposure children receive to POPs. Evidence of serious harm including cancer, type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular disease served as the basis for the WHO recommendation. Minimizing POPs exposure entails limiting consumption of animal fats. New York City school children and their parents should be provided with educational outreach that empowers dietary changes which will reduce POPs intake. Minimizing the total POPs exposures of these school children is necessary to minimize their disease risk.

Still so little real news offered by the MSM about the on-going Fukushima disaster. Its affects are here now and have been for some time. Much of this newz was recently made available yet deals with the fallout from the earlier days, such a lag in useful information available. It has been ongoing and some days have been (and will be) much worse than others. This is a world-changing event yet all the NRC chairman can offer is a pathetically guarded statement as to the events severity.

But that's not the part of his story the Reverend Jimmy Creech focuses on - not in print in his recently-published memoir, "Adam's Gift" - and not from the pulpit of Metropolitan Community Church-Los Angeles, where he distinguished God from a sex-negative mainstream church hierarchy.
