US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention Seeks to Minimize Harm Resultant from Past and Ongoing Chemical Use

In 2009, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's (CDCP) National Center for Environmental Health and Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry began a collaborative process designed to move the nation forward on the path of reforming corporate chemical use. The National Conversation on Public Health and Chemical Exposures culminated in the production of an Action Agenda for change. The Action Agenda sets forth detailed strategies for reshaping corporate chemical use so as to enter into a time of safe chemical use for all Americans. Benjamin Gerhardstein, a CDCP facilitator took a leading part in the development of the Action Agenda. He provides a dynamic snapshot of the Action Agenda and shares early steps toward realization of the safe chemical use goal.

However, projects of this kind are often ineffective because they focus excessively on technological solutions and are inattentive to user needs, preferences, and capacities. Rethinking Mental Illness - hope and resilience in mental health

This week we talked to Dr. Sheila Harms about mental health in Hamilton and on an international level. On Nov. 4, the International Women’s and Children’s Health conference was held in Hamilton. The focus of the conference was on “confronting the stigma: a global and multicultural perspective on the mental health of women and children”. Dr. Sheila Harms facilitated a workshop on the Grand Challenges of Global Mental Health at the conference. Dr. Harms is a Child and Adolescent Psychiatrist working at McMaster Children’s Hospital in Hamilton. She has a particular interest in marginalized populations and currently works with homeless and incarcerated youth to address mental health concerns. She participated as a clinician in the Grand Challenges in Global Mental Health in identifying key research priorities. The Grand Challenges of Global Mental Health are those specific barriers that, if removed, would help to improve the lives of those affected by neuropsychiatric illnesses. The goal of identifying these challenges is to ultimately develop effective interventions. Dr. Harms appeals to our listeners to be open to learning about what mental illness is beyond its stereotypes and stigma. It is important to remember the hope that resides in mental health issues and to recognize the resilience of those affected by mental illnesses. As the G-20 economic summit met austerity was sweeping Europe, the future of the Eurozone was in doubt and then the Greek government collapsed over its proposed new debt agreement with the European Union. The deal was reached by European leaders to stabilize the Euro and to avoid Greek default on its debt to the banks or its leaving the euro currency zone. Anger among Greek citizens stems from the proposed agreement's focus on more austerity to repay the bank loans leading to increased unemployment. A new world recession may be drawing closer after the G-20 failed to agree on fresh financial help for distressed countries. *************** Hey Union Busting Is Disgusting! - Joining the Sotheby Workers Protest with OWS Some 400 protesters in NYC greeted Sotheby's $500 million auction with a high-spirited, high-decibel demonstration in solidarity with its locked-out workers. Despite record profits last year, the posh auction house is demanding wage and benefit cuts, and the replacement of skilled, union workers with unskilled, non-union temporary workers.Several unions, including other Teamster locals, UAW, CWA, LiUNA, TWU, SEIU and UFT were represented at the demonstration, together with Hunter, NYU and Columbia University students and faculty, and of course Occupied Wall Street activists six of whom were arrested in an act of civil disobedience.

OWS welcomed the Respect DC Coalition who along with Wal-Mart-Free NYC told developer Related who seeks to build a Wal-Mart store in East New York that Wal-Mart's business practices, its salary and benefit levels, anti-union policies, its training and promotion, regarding people of color and women, and environmental concerns were rejected. Hell no Wal-Mart, not in NYC!
