In New York City, Liberty Plaza has been peacefully occupied 24 hours a day since September 17. Every day hundreds of people from all walks of life come to visit and participate. Melanie Butler is with Code Pink - she has been an active participant in the movement. We spoke with her September 24 and caught up with her again on October 1.

Case of unpaid treeplanters shows critical weakness in government monitoring

Some long overdue wages have finally been paid to 57 tree planters, more than a year after they were found living in squalid conditions in a remote camp in southeastern B.C. Ros Salvador is a lawyer with the B.C. Public Interest Advocacy Centre. We spoke with Ros about the case back in August, when the workers still hadn't received any money from their former employers.

Yesterday, 01 Oct. 2011, over 700 of the adamantly non-violent 99%ers occupying Liberty Plaza on Wall Street were led onto New York's Brooklyn Bridge by the police, trapped in a pincer maneuver, arrested and hauled to jail. Thousands crossing above on the overloaded pedestrian board plank walkway, with many concerned for their own safety, witnessed and documented the outrageous tactic of the New York police. "Kettled" a word used recently by participants, many students, in England to describe this dirty tactic by the police is now part of the American language. Indeed from an economic perspective many tens of millions are being "kettled" by stingy bankers sitting on over $2 trillion, refusing to "stimulate" the U. S. economy while reaping record salaries. Listen to Charles M. Young, a veteran journalist who witnessed yesterday's police outrage from the walkway above the mass arrests on the Brooklyn Bridge and has in the last 15 days attended many of the daily "General Assembly" meetings there. He describes some of the new social revolutionary new ways the 99%ers are organizing. Those across the country starting their own "occupations" may find this important.

A New Narrative on Rwanda

Dramatic developments from Dr. Rudasingwa, our guest from last week. On October 1st, Dr. Theogen Rudasingwa, former secretary-General and chief of staff to the Rwandan Patriotic Front, surprised the world when he issued a statement that Paul Kagame was involved in the shooting down of the Falcon 50 jet carrying the Presidents of Rwanda and Burundi in 1994. The current President of Rwanda came to power during the tragic events of 1994. Although discussed by investigators connected to the ICTR, as well as refugees, this is the first time someone so close to Kagame has confirmed the President's involvement in sparking the conflict: Paul Kagame was responsible for the crime of killing [President Juvénal Habyarimana of Rwanda and President Cyprien Ntaryamira of Burundi] in 1994. Kagame "told me that he was personally" involved in the downing of the jet, which is a 'public secret' within RPF circles. It has been a difficult journey for Rudasingwa. "I enthusiastically sold this deceptive story to foreigners, who by and large came to believe it, even when I knew Kagame was the culprit in this crime." Having experienced feelings of guilt for having been part of a false narrative, it has also been a redemptive process. "I've cast my burdens now, and I feel very free."

Vineet Singal is a senior majoring in Biology at Stanford University, and he's the, the Chair of Social Entrepreneurship of the ASSU (Associated Students of Stanford University) Executive Team 2011-2012. He also runs the campaign 100kcheeks.org to help coordinate people in need and donors for bone marrow. The 100kcheeks.org Campaign is a student nonprofit group for communities that are underrepresented in the bone marrow registry. The campaign uses stories and social media to inspire action and save lives in their search for 100,000 marrow donors. Simply just taking a cotton swab and putting it in your mouth can register anyone as a bone marrow donor in a matter of seconds. The project seeks to register 100,000 donors by November 2011 so that people who are dying of bone marrow cancer can find a match with a donor. Queer Discussions on Im/migration and Criminalization

The bodies of Indigenous people, queer people, migrants, people of colour and the poor have been exploited, governed, labelled and regulated by the Canadian and US states. The state has tried to interfere in our communities, our languages, our families, our love relationships and our ability to seek refuge. But we have seen that if we resist, we can win! No One Is Illegal-Toronto, their friends at Queers Against Israeli Apartheid called on queers, trans folks, two-spirted people, people of colour, migrants, workers, students, radicals, and allies to join us for an evening of discussion, reflection and celebration. This spring, No One is illegal Toronto mobilized to stop the deportation of their friend Alvaro Orozco, who was rejected for refugee status by the Canadian government because he didn't "look gay enough". This summer, people fought and struggled against the corporatization of Toronto Pride and dropped banners asserting the growing movement of Queers Against Israeli Apartheid. They also mobilized together one year after the repression of our communities during the G20 - where we continued to challenge the Toronto Police and stepped up the fight against Rob Ford's planned austerity cuts to the Toronto Budget. On Wednesday September 28th stories and thoughts were shared with HAVOQ (Horizontally Aligned Very Organized Queers) based out of San Francisco - who have been touring across occupied Turtle Island - on their Undoing Borders Tour - after launching their interactive zine "Undoing Borders: A Queer Manifesto". This zine is the culmination of over two years of collective work where in people came together to discuss and analyze the relevance of queer identity and migrant justice organizing, the intersections and the contradictions. Natalie Koui-Towe from QUAIA, Craig Fortier from No One Is Illegal and friends joined Essex, Li and Molly from HAVOQ to discuss recent victories, struggles and reflections on the intersections of local queer organizing, anti-colonial and no borders analyses!
