A Greener Way For San Jose

July 5, 2011, 9:28 p.m.
It’s the tenth largest city in the United States and the third largest city in California, but San Jose is often overshadowed by its popular neighbor to the north, San Francisco. This week on Sea Change Radio we talk about San Jose and the little-known ways that this big city is leading the charge toward sustainability. Our guest is Councilmember Ash Kalra, who talks with host Alex Wise about the successes and challenges of promoting environmentally sound policy in a city that’s one of the most ethnically and economically diverse in the nation. Councilmember Kalra tells us about the progress being made there, from hybrid busses, to a city-wide plastic bag ban, to the mission to make San Jose a zero-waste city. He also shares with us some of the challenges the city’s policymakers have encountered, including the economic downturn and a pervasive not-in-my-backyard attitude that stands in the way of progress. Listen now as we examine how the lessons learned in this urban microcosm of the United States can be applied to any city working for a greener tomorrow.

Freedom Flotilla Update for July 5

July 5, 2011, 8:05 p.m.
Here is an update on the status of Freedom Flotilla II: The captain of the US Boat to Gaza, the Audacity of Hope, has been released from jail but his charges have not been dropped. Nine passengers of the Audacity of Hope were arrested and released on July 3: Ken Mayers, Carol Murry, Medea Benjamin, Paki Wieland, Ray McGovern, Brad Taylor, Kit Kitteridge, Kathy Kelly and Linda Durham, after protesting in front of the US Embassy. On July 4th 6 passengers were arrested after protesting in front of the HOME of the US Ambassador to Greece. Shortly before 6 pm July 4 the Canadian boat, named Tahrir, left its dock in Crete to set sail for Gaza. They got to within 4 miles of international waters when Greek Special Forces stopped them from going any further. The Greek military boarded the Canadian boat and there are reports that when they asked for the captain of the boat all 30 people on board answered, “I am the captain.” The Greeks took command of the boat and at least report where headed back to be docked. There were reports that all of the people on the boat would be arrested, but no confirmation as of broadcast deadline. Two boats from France , a heavy cargo ship and a smaller passenger boat have reached international waters in the Mediterranean Sea. They avoided Greek ports and Greek waters. Their positions and intentions are not being publicized for obvious reasons. The Irish boat was sabotaged beyond repair last week and the Greek boat was also sabotaged but no updates on their status are available. All other boats that docked in Greek waters remain under siege, with the Greek coast guard doing the work of the Israeli Navy.
