Freedom Riders - attacked! Part 1
May 28, 2011, 12:36 p.m.
50 years ago today, under a secret arrangement with the Federal government put in place by Robert F. Kennedy, Nashville Stud ent Freedom Riders boarded buses from Montgomery, Alabama to Jackson, MiSsissippi, under National Guard escort. The National Guard escort was in response to a series of violent incidents that threatened the Freedom riders, the most serious of which occurred on Motherâs Day, May, 14th, 1961 when the riders were met by an angry mob (dressed in their Sunday finest as if theyâd just come from church) in Anniston, Alabama. Due to the ferocity of the mob, the bus decided not to stop at the station and it quickly left. But a member of the angry band had slashed the busâs tires at the station. A few miles outside of Anniston the tires began to deflate and the bus was forced to pull over. As the bus driver fled, a mob of men who had been following the bus got out of their cars and surrounded the stricken bus. From somewhere in the crowd a firebomb was thrown inside the bus and exploded. As the Freedom Riders tried to escape the smoke and flames they found they could not as the exit doors were blocked by the surging mob. Just then one of the gas tanks exploded on the bus and the mob rushed back allowing the Freedom Riders to push the doors open and escape. As they exited the burning bus, the Freedom Riders rushed outside still choking from the thick smoke and were beaten by the waiting vigilantes. As lead pipes and baseball bats were swung, only an onboard undercover agent prevented the Freedom Riders from being lynched that day as he fired his gun into the air. Later that same day the Freedom Riders were beaten a second time as they arrived in Birmingham, Alabama. Kennedy decided to act.

8 US soldiers killed in Afghanistan
May 27, 2011, 4:57 p.m.
Afghanistan, Thursday: Eight US soldiers were killed in an IED attack on their foot patrol. Major Tim James, a spokesman for NATO, stated two separate IED's were used, while the Washington Post reports a single bomb. This was the deadliest day for NATO in Afghanistan since April 27.
Afghanistan, Thursday: a NATO soldier of unreported nationality was killed in a helicoper crash.
Afghanistan, today: The AP wire is reporting that three more NATO soldiers were killed today, two in another IED attack and one in a separate unspecified attack. That makes 200 occupation soldiers killed this year.
Pakistan, last night: A suicide truck bomber killed 26 people in the town of Hangu. The blast was in an area near multiple government offices, and continues the Taliban's retaliation for the death of Osama Bin Laden.
Pakistan, Wednesday: Pakistani militants rammed a car packed with explosives into a police station in Peshawar, killing eight policemen and wounding over 30 more. The roadside police station was completely destroyed in the attack.
Nuristan, Afghanistan, Wednesday: Taliban fighters captured a government building in Daub District-and in so doing seized control of the Western half of the District. Three Afghan police were killed, NATO and Afghan military forces eo not patrtol the area. The RPG's and heavy weapons of the Taliban gave them an overwhelming advantage in firepower.
Baghdad, Iraq, Thursday: Thousands of supporters of anti-US cleric Moqtada al-Sadr marched through Sadr City, vowing to take up arms again if US forces remain in Iraq past the Dec 31 deadline for withdrawal agreed upon by the Iraqi government and George W Bush. During the march protesters kicked and burned US and Israeli flags.
Some protesters told reporters they have their weapons at home and that they were ready "at any moment that the cleric Muqtada al-Sadr gives his orders", to pick up arms and "fight the Americans".
Baghdad, Iraq, yesterday: Ali al-Lama, former head of the Coalition Provisional Government's de-Baathification effort, was executed by insurgents. He was approached at about 8Pm Baghdad time and shot in the head. He was despised by Sunni insurgents, incuding but not limited to ex-Baathists, as a traitor.
Basra, Iraq, Tuesday: A woman was slightly wounded and an American armored vehicle damaged when a bomb exploded in the desert area east of Basrah, a U.S. forces media source reported. The source told Aswat al-Iraq that the bomb was directed against the U.S. convoy, but no human casualties were reported on the American side.
Babel Province, Iraq, Wednesday: A US HUMVEE was destroyed in flames by a bomb directed against an American military convoy, security sources reported. As usual, no details on human casualties.
Wait a minute-WHAT US convoys? WHAT bombs? I thought US combat operations in Iraq were over! Oh yeah-that's been said before. Mr Barrack Obama, you got what you wanted in Pakistan, nothing else has changed in Iraq or Afghanistan in 8 years of war, and Iraq had nothing to do with September 11. Now's the time to pull the plug-bring all the troops home TODAY!
