Episode 04/26/2011

April 26, 2011, 1:09 a.m.
That's kind of a Warhammer reference. Only not really, probably. How goes it? Let the booze flow; it's that time again, and we've ALL been waiting all week for it. Rum Doings returns to Mother's Milk toinght, incidentally, with episode 11. That's going to take up most of the second hour, in typical delightful form. Rejoice! We had to stop airing them to get through Live Album Month and our Local Shelves quest, but their regular schedule - the last show of each month - resumes NOW!

Think Globally Trade Locally

April 25, 2011, 9:09 p.m.
Today on Sea Change Radio we talk to two innovative thinkers, one who’s already had an impact on how most Americans live, work, and exchange goods, and another who hopes to revise how we conceptualize and apply currency. Our first guest is Craig Newmark, the founder of craigslist. We’ve all heard the adage, “one man’s treasure is another man’s trash,” but nothing illustrates the point more clearly than a perusal of the listings on craigslist, a website that may be the single greatest influence in getting people to reuse stuff instead of always buying it new. We ask Craig if this sustainability angle was a part of his driving vision or more of a happy accident and learn about his latest project Craig Connects. Then, host Alex Wise talks with Matthew Slater, whose ambitious software initiative Drupal strives to create alternative or complementary currencies that will keep commerce more local and reduce the carbon pricetag of everyday exchanges.

But at the same time, it is every citizen's responsibility to disobey unjust laws." ~Martin Luther King Jr. "Reefer makes darkies think they're as good as white men." ~Harry J. Anslinger "The amount of money and of legal energy being given to prosecute hundreds of thousands of Americans who are caught with a few ounces of marijuana [1 ounce = 28g] in their jeans simply makes no sense - the kindest way to put it. A sterner way to put it is that it is an outrage, an imposition on basic civil liberties and on the reasonable expenditure of social energy." ~William F.
