Sister of Demetrius Favors - Michigan prisoner seeking clemency after 45 years in prison
April 20, 2011, 2:53 a.m.
In 1964, Demetrius Favors was a rowdy 20-year old from a difficult background, who made a mistake that landed him in prison with a life sentence. He shot and killed a man by mistake, in a robbery attempt gone bad. In his 45 years in prison, Demetrius has not sat idle - he has earned degrees, helped fellow inmates with their cases, began a scholarship fund in the name of his victim, and tried to make restitution to the victim's family. He's now a 68-year old man with health problems, and is asking the state of Michigan to allow him to live out his life in freedom. Although the parole board recommended that he be released, the state did not accept the recommendation. His case brings up a number of questions about the justice system, like whether locking away young men for life is making our society better or more safe, and why the justice system does not make efforts to rehabilitate people who commit crimes, or provide means for them to make restitution and amends for those they have hurt. Jenka Soderberg spoke with the sister of Demetrius Favors, who has started an online petition and letter-writing campaign to get the governor of Michigan to commute the life sentence of Demetrius Favors.

And get the damned little devils of the day-to-day off my back for a few. Let's do some songs that express this wanderlust and look forward to care-free times ahead!
