Dr. Arnold Schecter on Science Supporting the Conclusion that POPs Exposure Causes Cancer

Feb. 25, 2011, 3:25 p.m.
Dr. Arnold Schecter is an internationally recognized expert in persistent organic pollutants (POPs) exposure and disease outcome. He is a public health scientist. He shares recent research findings describing the contamination of US mothers' breast milk with PBDEs, brominated flame retardants, which are believed to impose cancer risk in ways similar to other endocrine disrupting chemicals. Dr. Schecter states that sufficient scientific knowledge exists upon which to base public health educational outreach on POPs exposure reduction. The simple public health message that Dr. Schecter sees in the scientific literature is this. POPs are toxic. Many POPs are carcinogens. POPs contaminate animal fat and therefore, restricting intake of animal fat will reduce POPs exposure. Reducing POPs exposure will reduce cancer risk and thus reduce cancer incidence population wide.
