Stiglitz: Deficits, Unemployment & Economic Growth
Jan. 22, 2011, 2:28 p.m.
The ink was hardly dry on the massive compromise federal tax bill when Republican leaders restarted their call for spending cuts in the new Congress to close the deficit. But Nobel Prize winning economist Joseph Stiglitz sets the record straight in his speech before the Roosevelt Institute. He says that the main cause of the deficits is the recession which premature deficit reduction would cause to deteriorate further. He also offers us a way to rebuild our economy which would also fight the increasing mal-distribution of wealth in this country by taxing the rich, reducing the military budget and investing in our cities, our infrastructure and new technologies to increase our productive capacities to increase economic growth.

Baby Doc Duvalier returns to Haiti
Jan. 22, 2011, 10:18 a.m.
In perhaps one of the strangest returns in history, Baby Doc Duvalier who is wanted in Haiti for crimes including murder and the theft of over $300 to 800 million dollars. of Haitian pub¬lic funds returned to his native land Sunday aboard a commercial flight.
"I came to help my country," the 59-year-old former despot declared as some 2,000 of his supporters met him at the airport. But it's hard to imagine how Duvalier's reappearance, which Haitian officials insist took them by surprise, could do anything more than throw Haiti into even deeper turmoil as it tries to rebuild after last year's disastrous earthquake and cholera epidemic.

Government Intimidation: The Grand Jury & the Patriot Act
Jan. 20, 2011, 9:10 p.m.
Sarah Smith traveled to Occupied Palestine and Israel with two friends to see for her self the facts on the ground. She is now threatened with a subpoena to appear before a Federal Grand jury investigatying 'material support for terriorist groups' on the State Departments arbitrary listing of terrorist groups. At the extreme she faces life in prison if she refuses to testify. Michael Deutsch speaks about the history of the Grand Jury and how its original purpose has been corrupted by the Federal Government from one of protecting citizens against government abuse into a tool of government repression. Ben Meyer speaks about the Patriot Act provision- material support for terrorist groups- that has been interpreted by the present reactionary activist Supreme Court to include speech - a direct attack on the Second Amendment of the Constitution of the United States and a chilling effect for religious, anti-war and international solidarity groups engaged in the struggle for human rights, peace and justice. Both
Deutsch and Meyers are lawyers who work with the National Lawyers Guild.
