On Revising MLK -- What he was NOT
Jan. 16, 2011, 6:50 p.m.
These days it seems like everyone appropriates heroes and legends for their own political ends. Republicans have finally figured out itâs bad press to diss the second most admired person of the 20th century (according to a 2000 gallup poll) and have consequently decided to honor Martin Luther King with their rhetoric if not their actions:
Quote: âour Party and the nation honors Dr. Kingâs dream by continuing his fight â the fight for all Americans to have an equal chance at the American Dream."Only, the republican party has been steadfast in destroying those very chances, voting overwhelming against the Childrenâs Health and Medicare Protection Act of 2007and their current steadfast refusal to pass healthcare reform. Maybe theyâve forgotten Dr. Kingâs words on that subject in 1965:
âOf all the forms of inequality, injustice in health care is the most shocking and inhumane. â
And he would not have spent much time parsing the efforts of the religious right, "A nation that continues year after year to spend more money on military defense than on programs of social uplift is approaching spiritual death".

BSTF 849 - "Bob's" Psychedelicatessen
Jan. 16, 2011, 8:05 a.m.
Welcome to the radio bistro where you can feed your head, and HOW!
Tonight the FUNHOUSE becomes "Bob"'s Psychedelicatessen! Dobbs is serving up nothing but trippy discs tonight, from the opening blare of Dave Cloud's EIGHT MILES HIGH to the Crazy World of Arthur Brown's SPONTANEOUS APPLE CREATION! In between he have iridescent offerings from the Cryan Shames, Crazy Elephant, the Deviants, a horrific pseudo Up with People-type song called DAY GLO DAY, Dave Wilkerson and Garner Ted Armstrong raving, the LSD scare flick LIKE IT IS, the Queers testifying I DON'T WANT TO BE A GRANOLAHEAD, Joe Byrd and the Field Hippies, Grains of Sand, TCA Atlantic, Strawberry Alarm Clock, the Incredible String Band, Dave Diamond and the Higher Elevation taking you through THE DIAMOND MINE... Trust me on this one, seekers -- the brown acid might HELP.
The Deviants were doing underground garage rock shit in 1967 that was off the fucking tracks! The song on tonight's show is NOWHERE MAN. I found their LP PTOOFF! at a Salvation Army and was stunned when I realized it was done so early -- it's got a growling, grating force and attitude that was the antithesis to the bubblegum tones of their time. According to some sources, Mick Farren and the Deviants were the original punk band.
