Upon his election, he worked with the Cubans to send their doctors, dentists and optical personnel to Venezuela to set up thousands of free neighborhood walk-in clinics. In exchange, Cuba received desperately needed fuel. The program is called Mission Barrio Aldentro.
Thanksgiving day repeat-Pequot Massacre
Nov. 25, 2010, 7:54 a.m.
We like to believe in a festive first Thanksgiving celebrating shared life in the 'New' world between the Indians and the Plymouth settlers, yet the truth is less sanquine. According to most historians, the Pilgrims never would have invited the Indians to join them. Pilgrims perceived Indians in relation to the Devil (in Governor William Bradford's words, they (the Indians) were "savage people, who are cruel, barbarous, and most treacherous.") and the more probable reason they were invited to the feast was for the purpose of eventually negotiating a treaty that would secure the lands for the Pilgrims. Perhaps one reason we have so many myths about Thanksgiving is that it is more an invented tradition, than an historically specific one, an amalgam of the first tense meeting in 1621 for primarily political purposes and a more horrific event that took place nearly 16 year later in 1637: The Pequot Massacre.
Monolithic Conspiracies, Pleasure Centres, Climate Changelings, Silver Dollars - November 25, 2010
Nov. 25, 2010, 6:21 a.m.
These episodes: during CKLN's Fundfest week, we ask is the JFK murder-conspiracy still relevant today? Why did Alduous Huxley die the same day? Should we read old books like 1984 and Brave New World? Do they relate to us accepting being irradiated or groped at the airports? And soon in other public places? How do we relate to each other to avoid accepting it and more? Why are we given no news we can use about how we're run and how we can change it? Where can we find it and what can we do with it?

The Pre-Thanksgiving show has your host Jeff, contemplative and chatty. Lots of music, though....lots of awful, amateurish engineering too. (sigh)

Deforestation Condemnation: Greenpeace's Rolf Skar
Nov. 23, 2010, 6:32 p.m.
According to the World Bank, Indonesia is the planetâs third largest carbon dioxide emitter. But the problem in Indonesia differs from ours here in the United States. Rather than pollutants from cars or the energy and industrial sectors, in Indonesia, the primary culprit is deforestation. More than 64 million acres of Indonesia's forests have been cut down or burned over the past two decades in order to make room for industrial growth.
Fortunately, Greenpeace has been working hard on a campaign to stop deforestation in places like Indonesia. By pressuring key corporations and governments, Greenpeace is helping to save many forests and slow climate change. One of the voices behind the Greenpeace campaign is Rolf Skar, a senior deforestation campaigner with the organization. Sea Change Radio host Alex Wise sits down with Skar this week as they discuss deforestation in Indonesia, the UN Climate Change Conference that kicks off in Cancun, Mexico next week, and how we can all make a difference with day-to-day choices as consumers.

Stopping Tar Sands: Small Step, Litigation Challenging BP-Whiting Refinery Expansion Permits Triggers Reassessment Of Emissions; Big Picture, Attack Tar Sands Exploitation As Unethical
Nov. 23, 2010, 2:28 p.m.
Ann Alexander, Esq is an attorney who conducts environmental litigation for the Natural Resources Defense Council (NRDC). She is currently litigating against the construction and operation permits that have been issued to BP for expansion of the BP-Whiting refinery, located in Whiting, Indiana. The refinery is being expanded so as to have sufficient capacity to refine tar sands sourced crude. Tar sands crude, also referred to as bitumen is a very dirty form of fuel resource. Refining the bitumen involves a large number of steps, including upgrading to syncrude, which can be transported through pipelines from northeastern Alberta, Canada where the bitumen is extracted to refineries located in the Great Lakes basin. NRDC filed legal actions against BP and the State of Indiana because the permits issued to the facility were based on deliberate underestimates of pollutant releases. BP underestimated releases in an attempt to avoid compliance with Clean Air Act New Source Review, which requires utilization of modern air pollution control technology when a new facility is built or when an existing facility significantly alters its sources of emissions.
The US Environmental Protection Agency has agreed with NRDCâs position concerning the underestimate of emissions and ordered BP and the State of Indiana to produce a credible estimate of emission increases. Once an acceptable estimate exists, it will be used to determine what air pollution control equipment is required to bring the expansion project into compliance with the Clean Air Act.
Attorney Alexander puts the legal challenges to the BP-Whiting permits in perspective. Clean Air Act litigation is a lawful way to create some measure of justice in the expansion of industrial projects. However, considering the total amount of environmental damage caused by tar sands exploitation, NRDC is opposing the extraction and refining of tar sands, thus taking a stop tar sands position. The organizationâs strategy is to attack tar sands exploitation as a morally indefensible activity. Bringing large numbers of people to view the tar sands as an unethical source of energy constitutes the big plan for NRDC. A mass movement could develop and make the demand that tar sands exploitation be stopped. Honor to NRDC and Attorney Alexander for taking up a strong role in protecting the Earth and the living beings of the Earth. We discuss the possibilities of bringing such a mass movement into existence and find agreement upon the matter of spiritual forces being important to the creation of this force for change.
