The Occupation of Western Sahara
Nov. 20, 2010, 9:07 a.m.
The Western Sahara is a former Spanish colony, and is the scene of Africa's longest-running territorial dispute. The phosphate-rich territory was annexed by Morocco after Spanish settlers left in 1975. The Polisario liberation front fought a guerrilla war against Morocco until the UN brokered a ceasefire in 1991. Morocco now offers to grant it autonomy, while Polisario is demanding a referendum on full independence. The talks between both sites have been deadlocked for years, and the last meeting in February 2010 ended without any movement in the dispute. On Monday November 8th at least ten people have been killed in clashes in Western Sahara, after Moroccan security forces broke up a protest camp near the territory's capital, Laayoune. This protest camp has been the biggest protest against Moroccan rule in the 35-year dispute. The repression by Moroccon forces came just days before a meeting in New York between Polisario and Moroccan officials to try and broker peace in the region.

Deficit Commission Nightmare with Dean Baker
Nov. 19, 2010, 3:52 p.m.
A presidential commissionâs leaders outlined a $3.8 trillion deficit-cutting plan
that would trim among other things Social Security and Medicare, reduce
income-tax rates and eliminate tax breaks including the mortgage-interest
deduction, the child tax credit and the earned income tax credit. Deficit
reduction would also make it harder to emerge from the recession, causing
tax revenues to fall further setting the stage for further budget cuts. The Social
Security retirement age would rise to 68 in about 2050 and 69 in about 2075.
AFL-CIO Pres. Richard Trumka said the panel chairmen âjust told working
Americans to âdrop dead.ââ In an e-mailed statement, Trumka said, âThe very
people who want to slash Social Security and Medicare spent this week
clamoring for more unpaid Bush tax cuts for millionaires.â While the
Commissionâs Allan Simpson said the plan was designed to give members
of the panel something to âchew onâ for further discussions, itâs enough to
choke the rest of us.

He reflects on Israel's increased aggression towards witnesses and social justice activists, the current precarious state of Palestine's education system, and the healing work of international solidarity for a Palestine that is free from occupation, apartheid and colonialism, with a special focus on the global Boycott, Divestment, and Sanctions campaign.

#142 -- Jonathan Zittrain: How to Save the Internet
Nov. 19, 2010, 1:23 p.m.
A sharp & funny presentation. The more we depend on the Internet, the scarier is its real vulnerability to malicious attacks. However, the "solution" urged by government and Big Telecom--"top-down" control of the network by themselves--would ruin the Internet, Zittrain argues. A better solution is continued "bottom-up" control by users--but control of a more "communitarian," consensus-seeking sort than now. Examples of this approach are working well in practice, among them Wikipedia.
