Labor Express for 8-16-10
Aug. 16, 2010, 6:02 p.m.
This is the full 8-16-10 episode of the Labor Express Radio program.
On this weekâs episode of Labor Express Radio we return to an issue we covered a month and a half back, but not nearly with the depth we should have. This monthâs edition of Labor Notes, the leading labor news publication in the United States, has an excellent article analyzing the meaning of the so called agreement reached between the Chicago Federation of Labor and Wal-Mart in June. The author of the article, Labor Notes editor Mischa Gaus lay outs out the reality of this surrender by organized labor to the seeming all powerful, and so far unstoppable worldâs number one retail corporation. Mischa describes the quote un-quote agreement as Wal-Mart outmaneuvering the living wage advocates in Chicago. Will hear what he means by this right from the source in the first half of the program.
Later in the program will hear about how the administration at UIC (University of Illinois at Chicago) reclassifies workers in its administrative departments so as to weaken the bargaining power of SEIU Local 73 which represents civil service workers at the university. This issue and the fact that negotiations between SEIU and he university are at an impasse means a strike is very likely starting August 24th the first day of classes for the Fall session.
Labor Express Radio is Chicago's only English language labor news and current affairs radio program. News for working people, by working people. Labor Express Radio airs every Monday morning at 10:00 AM on Chicago's Sound Alliance, WLUW, 88.7 FM. For more information, see our website at: www.laborexpress.org

The Biofuel Boom: Innovations in Driving for Today and Tomorrow
Aug. 16, 2010, 12:47 p.m.
Producing biofuel is kind of like brewing beer, a practice thatâs been around since the Phoenicians and Egyptians first fermented things, according to Bill Haywood, CEO of the San Francisco-based company LS9. He explains to Sea Change Radio host, Alex Wise, how his company uses gut bacterium E. Coliâs digestion capabilities (which have been around for billions of years) to convert sugar to biofuels and chemicals. The LS9 interview ends asking, where can we drivers actually get these biofuels? Thatâs the question that Karri Ving, Biofuel Coordinator for SFGreasecycle, seeks to answer. The program diverts fryer oil from being dumped in San Franciscoâs sewers to turn it into biofuels that power the cityâs entire diesel fleet.
